Charlamagne Tha God clashed with CNN political commentator Van Jones on Wednesday for arguing that New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani “missed an opportunity” in what he described as a “sharp” victory speech.
Jones, moments after Mamdani concluded his speech, claimed that the democratic socialist was not as “calm” and “welcoming” as he was on the campaign trail, adding that he missed the opportunity to attract more people to his “tent” and showed a “small change in character.”
The radio host, who participated in CNN’s election night coverage but did not appear on a panel with Jones, gave the network’s political commentator the title of “Donkey of the Day” on Power 105.1 FM’s “Breakfast Club” before questioning what he found “divisive” in the democratic socialist’s speech.
“Van, shut your mouth forever, okay? No opportunity was missed, the guy just won, okay? Like he just won. After you won, yeah, you’re going to celebrate. Yeah, you’re going to talk out loud. What do you mean it wasn’t warm enough?” said.

Charlamagne, early in the segment, showed a clip of Mamdani discussing his hopes for working with police officers to reduce crime and address homelessness.
Elsewhere in the speech, Mamdani declared that “their fight is ours too” after referring to immigrants, the transgender community, single mothers and Black women who were “fired from a federal job” by President Donald Trump.
“How is all of that divisive?” Charlamagne said, noting that Mamdani addressed the working class of “all races” in his comments.
Charlamagne later stressed that Mamdani “deserved to take a victory lap.”
“I just don’t understand how in the era of Trump we still tell people how to talk. The language of politics is dead and Donald Trump killed it. And you know when you can actually talk that way? After you win,” he said.
Charlamagne went on to suggest that Jones disagreed with Mamdani’s comments about “bad owners,” billionaires and the president.

“So how can Van Jones be angry because someone is challenging capitalism and authoritarian strategy?” asked.
