Kelly Marie Tran can proudly promote “the wedding banquet” as a personal milestone even before the film opens on Friday.
Tran and his co-star have Gi-chan, Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang made fun of their performances in the Romantic Comedy of Ang Lee in 1993, directed by Andrew Ahn, in a Vanity Fair movie the past fall. In his interview, Trad confirmed that he is strange for the first time publicly. Five months later, she doesn’t regret it.
“He did not plan to leave at all,” said the actor of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” to News. “But this movie was such a warm hug of an experience. I remember thinking: ‘I don’t want to hide this part of myself,’ and how hypocritical it would be to enjoy the benefits of this experience and not share that part of me. I’m glad that it happened in a natural way.”
It is easy to see why Tran felt encouraged by the lovely charms of “the wedding banquet”. The film follows a lesbian couple from Seattle, Angela (Tran) and Lee (Gladstone), who are preparing to start a family.

When an in vitro fertilization treatment leaves them tied by cash, women hatch a plan with their Gay Chris (Yang) and Min (Han) friends, who are also a couple. Angela will marry Min so that she can access her family’s richness and he, in turn, can ensure a green card to remain in the United States and far from her severe Korean grandmother (Youun Yuh-Jung). In the true romantic fashion, hijinks are soon produced.
Having explored the intersection of Asian identities and LGBTQ+ in “Night Spa” of 2016 and “Fire Island” of 2022, Ahn collaborated on the script of “The Wedding Banquet” with James Schamus, who wrote the script of the 1993 film.
The new version reflects the matrimonial equality and the greatest visibility of families raised by same sex parents. The stage moved from New York to Seattle, which was fundamental for the background history for the indigenous character of Gladstone.

Ahn admits to feel “intimidated” by the perspective of reinventing “the wedding banquet” today. After seeing images of his brother’s Korean wedding “and thinking about how, like a gay person, [the ceremony] He mentioned complicated feelings about culture, family and identity, ”he was inspired.
“I had many ideas about how this movie could make for a modern audience and, in some way, to do it for me,” said Ahn. “Now we can get married. Queer people have to be intentional about having children because we can’t accidentally have an baby. There is so much that I wanted to talk to be new, while borrowing the perspective of the movie Lee.”
Secondary characters also received contemporary updates. After Youn joined the cast, the actor “Mini” suggested that his character change his grandmother’s mother from MIN to her grandmother, thus intensifying the generational dynamics. Meanwhile, Angela’s mother, May (Joan Chen), became an ally of LGBTQ+ rights whose devotion limits with self -contracting.

“I wanted to portray a mother who did not exist in 1993,” said Ahn. “I love the idea of a mother who almost supports her gay son, to the point that she begins to feel, is she doing this or her daughter?”
“[May] Publicly parade as if it were the biggest ally, but did not support his son when he initially left, “Tran.” I think it is an interesting way to subvert the expectation that some people have when they see an Asian mother in a film, where she is the stereotype of ‘Mom Tigre’ “.
She continued observing: “I am from a very conservative religious family, so I had to unlearn much of that in my 20 and 30 years to accept myself and my rarity. Angela feels a lot of pain and resentment with her mother. I related to that experience, and I think many queer people can also.”

As in the original, “The Wedding Banquet” ends with a happy note for its central quartet. Ahn and Tran have the hope that the film will send a message to the LGBTQ+ community and others that fear more reversions to their rights in the current political climate.
“How is joy experienced in the midst of recognizing that there is a threat to that joy? It’s a lot to think about,” Tran said. “But it makes me enjoy the moments of joy that I have shared with this cast.”

Ahn added: “Now there is so much anxiety, so much doubt about the progress we have achieved. I think that art is an opportunity for us to be vulnerable in a SA space faith and, through that vulnerability, we get strength so that we have more tools to make changes, protest and prepare for the work we have to do in advance.”
