The mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, who was arrested on Friday while protested against a new local immigration detention center, addresses a claim from the interim prosecutor of the United States of New Jersey, Alina Haba, that he had “ignored multiple warnings”, and therefore deserved to be arrested.

Baraka was held for more than an hour and joined CNN “The Source” later that night.

“The reality is that Alina Haba was not there,” the Democrat told host Kaitlan Collins. “The United States prosecutor was not there. She doesn’t know what happened … I was there for more than an hour in that space, and nobody told me to move. I was there for more than an hour.”

“Neither a single person, nor an ICE officer, nor any of the security guards, nobody told me to leave that place,” he continued. “Someone of national security reached the end and began to intensify the situation, and we ended up being where we are today.”

Baraka was arrested during a protest against the reopening of Delaney Hall, an immigration control and customs detention center for immigrants in Newark. His wife, Linda Baraka, believes that the federal government deliberately attacked him.

He had then justified the arrest publicly on social networks and argued that the Democratic Mayor and the current candidate for governor was legitimately arrested. For Trump’s personal lawyer, Haba, became an advisor to the president in December.

“The mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, committed a transfer and ignored multiple warnings of national security investigations to withdraw from the ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey this afternoon,” he wrote on Friday in X, previously Twitter.

“He has voluntarily chose to ignore the law,” Haba continued. “That will not remain in this state. It has been arrested. No one is above the law.”

When asked what would say to several critics who are painting the arrest as an advertising trick for his governor’s offer, Baraka told Collins that he had simply been asking the GEO group, that the installation operates, for an “updated occupation certificate” before his reopening.

“They haven’t had one in 20 years,” he said. “We say they need one, because local law demands that they have to obtain a change of use [permit]. They dispute it, and that is your right to dispute it. But the person who resolves that is a judge in a court of justice. ”

Baraka was equally firm when addressing Haba’s direct statement that he violated the law.

“I didn’t go there to break any law, I didn’t violate any law,” he said Friday. “I was there as mayor of the city, exercising my right and his duty as an elected official, you know, supporting our congressmen, preparing for a press conference that was supposed to happen there.”

“I did not enter that place illegally, I did not violate any law, and all that is incorrect,” Baraka continued. “Then, she wasn’t there. So she should get better information.”
