A “powerful Morphin Power Rangers” creative insists that no one was “stereotypes” when the program made two questionable casting options in the 90s.

Decades after the beloved series of superheroes for children debuted in 1993, former chief writer Tony Oliver said it was a bad decision for the show choosing a black actor like the black ranger and an Asian actor like the yellow ranger.

“It was a big mistake,” he said in the episode of the “dark side of the Power Rangers” of the “Hollywood Demons” series of Research Discovery, as recapitulated by Entertainment Weekly.

Oliver said he did not register the racially charged optics until his assistant “he said at a meeting one day.”

It was not clear immediately who was responsible for launching Walter Emanuel Jones like the Ranger Black and Thuy Trang as the yellow ranger, but Oliver said “none of us [were] Thinking stereotypes ”during the show.

The character of Jones, Zack Taylor, “seemed to have the arrogance of the group”, while Trini Kwan of Trang was “the Pacific, which tends to be the conscience of the group,” Oliver added.

He also pointed out: “Thuy was not our original yellow ranger,” noting that the character was first played by the multirracial actor Audri Dubois, who left a salary dispute after the pilot.

While Oliver characterized color options as a purely coincidence, Jones seemed to recognize the awkward connotation at that time. According to EW, docuseries include images behind the scene that show the actor that says: “My name is Walter Jones, I play Zack. I am black and I play the Ranger Black … Go figure.”

However, Jones also said that he didn’t even notice the awkward casting until others pointed to him.

“No one really talked about me playing the black ranger at the beginning,” he said in a 2014 interview. “But after Trang was hired, everyone said” Wait a minute! The yellow ranger is Asian and you are the black ranger and you are a black boy. “They were going to replace Audri Dubois with another girl in any way, but she was Asian.”

Later, the sodas of the black and yellow rangers helped blur the controversy as the show progressed.
