The Christian bodybuilder reveals how fitness honors God: ‘Your body is a temple’

It is known that regular exercise benefits physical and mental health, but there has been some debate about whether the search for physical improvements could conflict with Christian principles.
Some have warned that putting too much focus on physical aptitude could deviate to “idol worship”, which is when another persecution overcomes devotion to God.
In the book “Fellified gods: empty promises of money, sex and power and the only hope that matters,” the author Tim Keller defines an idol as “anything more important for you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything that seeks to give him what only God can give.”
According to some views, that could even include exercise.

Others, such as Hunter Sprague, a Christian bodybuilder and father of three children in Texas, take a different perspective.
After spending time in the Christian ministry, Sprague took advantage of his personal passion for the exercise and construction of force to launch the monolith movement, a training and tutoring platform that helps men balance faith and aptitude.

In an interview in the Chamber with News Digital, Sprague described physical health as a form of spiritual administration, which is reflected in 1 Corinthians in the New Testament: “Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit … therefore, honor God with your body.” (See part of the video interview at the top of this article).

Sprague acknowledged that in Gnosticism, a set of ancient religious beliefs that emerged around the 1st and second centuries, the followers believed that the physical body and the material world “simply did not matter.”
“If they are going to save you, you will not illuminate, you have to ascend to the body,” he said about belief. “It is this mentality that is my heart, and my body doesn’t matter.”
‘Our bodies import’
Over time, Sprague was able to achieve a balance between his commitment to physical aptitude and his devotion to his faith.
“Our bodies are important, our material physical world is important: it was created,” he said, and pointed out that the physical form is a critical part of who we are designed to be.

“That is the natural created order: if the Lord did not want you to have a body, you would not have one.”
“I think the Lord used the aptitude to enlighten this for me,” Sprague continued. “I can’t simply live a mental faith: there must be an experimental power that accompanies him.”
“If the Lord did not want you to have a body, you wouldn’t have one.”
In his opinion, exercise and physical aptitude are a way of embracing control, the “agency”, which the Lord has given us on our bodies.
“This is mainly a matter of administration,” said Sprague. “How are you managing the fact that you have a functional body? How are you managing the fact that you have given all these tools, resources and skills?”
“What are you doing with him for the benefit of others, for your benefit, while looking to love the Lord and delight him, and you have that sense of peace, hope and resistance?”
Healthy Life Tips
In his own personal physical conditioning routine, Sprague said he focuses on a combination of strength and cardio training.
“For many people, fitness is equivalent only to weight loss, but it is losing weight without developing muscle, it is shooting in the foot,” he told News Digital.

Strength training is “absolutely crucial” for Americans at this time, the expert said, since many people have “overweight and less muscles.”
Sprague passes from three to four days a week in the gym raising weights and using cable machines.
“It is the difficult part, it is slow burn. It doesn’t happen by accident,” he said. “He is simply pressing me week after week, competing against myself.”

For cardio, Sprague recommends finding opportunities to stay in motion and increase the daily steps.
“You will see a big difference between 2,000 or 4,000 steps and double it at 8,000 or 10,000,” he said. “And if you can climb from there, the more, happier.”

Walking is an “easy entrance barrier,” he said, and is very good for brain health and digestion.
In addition to alternating between walking and running, Sprague recommends finding other ways to stay active in everyday life.
“Only more activity along with something you enjoy is really useful,” he said.

In terms of nutrition, Sprague focuses on what he calls “modular food”, including some lean proteins, fibrous vegetables and a handful of carbohydrates.
If you are trying to achieve a particular objective, carefully track your food consumption to obtain “absolute clarity” in how you are going.

“You will see a big difference between 2,000 or 4,000 steps and double it at 8,000 or 10,000,” said the expert. “And if you can climb from there, the more, happier.” (Istock)
When it comes to supplements, Sprague said it keeps it “very, very simple.”
“I do creatine and monohydrate every day. I will use protein powders to achieve my protein target with minimal calories.”
‘Observe the goodness of God’
For anyone who wants to honor their body and also honor the Lord, Sprague said it is important to recognize that physical being is important, but that it will never be the main source of happiness or peace.

“It’s hard to be satisfied, it’s hard to get to a place where you like them, ‘I’ve finished, I did it,” Sprague said. “There will always be this feeling of ‘there is more why doing, there is more to do'”.
“My identity, my value, my value, is not wrapped in what I get physically, rather, this process is just a joy in itself.”

In the search for greater physical aptitude, Sprague said it is essential to “notice the goodness of God” in everything.
“It is a means of grace that the Lord designed endorphins for you: he designed dopamine for you,” he said. “He designed the feeling of achievement you get when you raise something or run a little further or have a very good day with your food, that is not inconsequential.”
“The more you bring the Lord to this and notice his goodness in him, the better it will be.”
Establishing specific objectives and making a plan to achieve them is the most effective path towards success, according to the expert.

“Simply get an impulse and start putting one foot in front of the other,” said Sprague.
“Everything is reduced to time and effort. I put some pressure on yourself, establish some deadlines and simply do it, because thinking, considering and reflecting will do it absolutely anywhere,” he continued.
