An American was killed by a buffalo who was tracking during a Trophous hunting In South Africa, police said Friday.

The man of Dallas, Texas, was found dead last Sunday on a farm in the province of Northern Limpopo. The victim’s name was not revealed by the Police, but several American media, citing the Safari company that organized the expedition, identified it as Asher Watkins, 52.

“Asher was fatally injured in a sudden attack and not caused by an involuntary buffalo that was tracking together with one of our professional hunters and one of our trackers,” said Hans Vermaak, whose family directs the Safari company that organized the expedition, in a statement to The New York Times.

The victim had wounds in the stomach and torso, and a buffalo who had been shot dead was lying nearby, police said.

A police statement said they had been alerted by the security personnel on the farm that led them to “a lifeless body of a man already certified in an ambulance.”

The Safari company website describes Cape Buffalo as “the most dangerous animal to pursue in Africa, much less in the world”, added that the animal is responsible for “several deaths and many injuries for hunters every year.”

Cabo Buffalo has been called “La Mafia del Monte”, according to Kariega Game Reserve, because large animals “tend to take revenge when they are getting into them and it is known that they return, lurk and attack or kill the hunters.”
