The virus transmitted by mosquitoes through China causes high fever, joint pain

A virus transmitted by mosquitoes has led to a generalized outbreak in China, generating concerns about the global impact.
The US disease control and prevention centers have issued a level 2 alert for a Chikungunya virus outbreak in the province of Guangdong, where health officials have reported more than 7,000 cases as of Wednesday, according to News (AP).
The virus spreads when a mosquito feeds on an infected person and then bites another person.

There are ongoing efforts to control mosquitoes that extend the virus, including the use of networks, insecticides and drones, according to the report.
Chikungunya cases have also extended throughout Europe, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

Since the beginning of 2025, approximately 240,000 cases of CHIKVD and 90 deaths in 16 countries and territories, including America, Africa, Asia and Europe have been reported, the health agency in July reported.
No cases acquired locally in the US have been confirmed since 2019, according to CDC data.
Symptoms and risks
The common symptoms of Chikungunya include high fever and joint pain, according to Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst at News.
They usually begin between three and seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Some people may also experience headache, joint swelling, eruption and muscle pain, CDC said.
In most cases, symptoms decrease within a week, but some may suffer severe joint pain for months or years after infection.
“Occasionally, neurological complications arise, including encephalitis (brain swelling).”

People with greater risk of serious diseases include adults of 65 years or more, newborns and people with comorbidities, such as heart disease or diabetes, CDC said.
Chikungunya is rarely fatal.
Stop the propagation
The Chikungunya virus is not transmitted among humans. It cannot be extended through physical contact, cough or sneezing, according to CDC.
While there have been cases of Chikungunya in Southeast Asia, the high volume in southern China is new, Siegel said.

“China’s containment strategy is also very restrictive and draconian, and it will probably not work,” Digital’s News told News.
The country has shared plans to use drones to look for stagnant water where mosquitoes are reproduced, as well as spray parks, public places and even people with insect repellent, said the doctor.

“Officials go to the door dresses with red vests and fines or arrest anyone who still has water,” Siegel said, citing a New York Times report.
“They are also quarantine at sick people in the hospital for a week under the mosquito network.”

Another tactic is to use elephant mosquitoes, which produce larvae that eat aedes mosquitoes that spread the virus, Siegel added.
“It is not likely that any of this works, since people live too much together and these mosquitoes reproduce easily,” he said.
Prevention and treatment
There are currently no specific medications to treat Chikungunya virus.
The best way to keep the virus at bay is to avoid mosquito bites, according to experts.

Recommended prevention strategies include the use of insect repellent in the EPA, wear long -sleeved shirts and pants, keep window screens, wear mosquito nets if they sleep outside and treat clothes and equipment with 0.5% permethrine (a synthetic chemical used mainly as insecticide).

There are two vaccines available in the USA.: A lively attenuated vaccine (IXCHIQ) and a particle vaccine similar to a virus (Vimkunya), which can be recommended for higher risk travelers who plan to visit places where the virus prevails, the CDC declared.
Travelers must speak with a medical care provider to determine if they are candidates for the vaccine.
