Google converts CO2 into battery energy to obtain clean energy

NEWNow you can listen to News articles!

Carbon dioxide generally is blamed for climate change, not praised to solve it. But Google plans to turn the script. The company has just announced an association with the Italian firm Energy Dome to help store clean energy using carbon dioxide in a completely new way.

This collaboration will deploy long -term energy storage systems, also known as LDES, in Google’s renewable energy projects worldwide. The idea is simple but powerful: storing extra energy when wind and solar production is high, and free it when the heavens darke or the wind goes out.

Most current batteries can only provide approximately four hours of backup energy. That could help during short casualties in production, but fails during interruptions overnight or cloudy and windless days. Energy Dome offers a better solution.

Why Google chose the CO2 battery

Google selected Energy Dome CO2 battery because it provides clean and dispatchable energy for up to 24 hours. Unlike lithium ion systems, which depend on expensive materials that are often difficult to follow, this battery uses standard and physical simple mechanical components.

Instead of storing electricity in a chemical form, the CO2 battery stores it by compressing carbon dioxide gas in a liquid. When the electricity grid needs more electricity, the system heats and expands that liquid CO2 again in a gas. As the gas expands, a turbine turns, as the steam would, which generates electricity.

What is artificial intelligence (AI)?

Once the gas cools, the system captures it again in the dome for future use. This closed circuit process is repeated as necessary, providing an efficient and carbon shape to soften demand and energy supply.

Energy Dome has already shown that technology works. His first commercial installation in Italy has been operating successfully for more than three years. With a capacity of 20 megawatts and 200 megawatts-Hora, the plant demonstrates that carbon dioxide can play a surprisingly powerful role in making renewable energy more reliable.

A scalable and reliable way to store clean energy

Google’s support could significantly accelerate the global deployment of this technology. While wind and solar energy are affordable and widely available, they remain inconsistent by nature. Without storage, its reliability suffers.

Energy Dome’s CO2 battery helps close this gap. It can store renewable energy when production is high and release when demand reaches its maximum point. This flexibility admits not only Google data centers, but also entire communities that depend on a stable electricity.

The battery also offers another key benefit. Its rotating machinery adds natural inertia to the grid. That helps stabilize the flow of energy, which becomes more important as the oldest fossil fuel plants go out and leave less tools for the balance of the network.

By investing in the energy dome and planning commercial implementations in regions such as North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, Google hopes to achieve its goal of operating in carbon free energy 24/7 by 2030.

What this means for you

This advance in energy storage will affect much more than Google’s internal operations. As this technology expands, more people could benefit from reliable electricity even when solar panels stop producing or wind turbines stop rotating.

Cleaner and more flexible energy storage also reduces the need for fossil fuel power plants. This change helps reduce emissions and create a more resistant network for homes, schools, hospitals and companies.

The scalability of the CO2 battery opens the door to the wider access. Communities around the world could see improvements in both affordability and energy security as implementation grows.

Kurt’s Key Takeways

The Google Association with Energy Dome solves a very current problem. The world needs clean energy that works 24 hours, not only when the climate cooperates. Long -term energy storage offers that reliability. By storing energy in carbon dioxide and releasing it on request, this new battery model offers a profitable, scalable and sustainable solution. With global investments and commercial projects already underway, the future of clean energy could arrive long before expected.
