Netanyahu defends the plan to expand the war in Gaza
Australia will recognize a Palestinian state, said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday, joining the leaders of France, Great Britain and Canada by pointing out that they would.
His comments followed weeks of urging from his cabinet and many in Australia to recognize a Palestinian State and in the middle of the growing criticisms of his government officials for suffering in Gaza, which Albanese referred on Monday as a “humanitarian catastrophe.”

The Australian government has also criticized the plans announced in recent days by Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu for a sweep a new military offensive in Gaza.
Netanyahu defended the offensive on Sunday, which is more radical than announced above, declaring a growing conviction at home and abroad that Israel “has no choice but to finish the work and complete the defeat of Hamas.”
Netanyahu said that the security cabinet instructs last week the dismantling of Hamas strengths not only in the city of Gaza but also in the “central camps” and Muwasi. A source familiar with the operation, which spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media, confirmed to News that Israel plans it in both areas.
The camps, which take refuge more than half a million displaced people, according to the UN, had not been part of Israel’s previous announcement. It was not clear why, although Netanyahu faced criticism this weekend within his ruling coalition to go to the city of Gaza was not enough. Netanyahu said there would be “safe areas”, but such designated areas have been bombed in the past.
Albanese told journalists after a cabinet meeting on Monday that Australia’s decision to recognize that a Palestinian State will be formalized at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The recognition was “based on the commitments that Australia has received from the Palestinian authority,” said Albanese.
These commitments did not include any paper for Hamas in a Palestinian government, the demilitarization of Gaza and the celebration of elections, he said.
“A solution of two states is the best hope of humanity to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East and put an end to the conflict, suffering and starvation in Gaza,” Albanese said.
“The situation in Gaza He has gone beyond the worst fears of the world, “he said.” The Israeli government continues to challenge international law and deny enough help, food and water for desperate people, including children. ”
“Until Israeli and Palestine status is permanent, peace can only be temporary,” he said. “Australia will recognize the right of the Palestinian people to their own state. We will work with the international community to make this correct a reality.”
The Israel-Hamas War in Gaza since the attack of the Palestinian militant group against Israel on October 7, 2023, has revived the global impulse towards a Palestinian state. Before Albanese’s announcement, Netanyahu criticized Australia on Sunday and other European countries that have moved in that direction.
“Having European countries and Australia march towards that burrow of rabbits … This canard is disappointing and I think it is really shameful,” said the Israeli leader.
Australia has appointed Hamas a terrorist entity and Albanese repeated on Monday the calls of his government so that the group returns the Israeli hostages held from the October 7 attack.
The Australian leader last week spoke with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose authority manages parts of occupied Bank, supports a solution of two states and cooperates with Israel in security matters. Abbas has agreed the conditions with Western leaders, including Albanese, while preparing to recognize a Palestinian state.
“This is an opportunity to offer self -determination for the people of Palestine in an isolated way to Hamas, disarms it and takes it out of the region once and for all,” Albanese said. He added that Hamas did not admit a solution of two states.
Almost 150 of the 193 members of the United Nations have already recognized the Palestinian State, most of them decades ago. The United States and other Western powers have been delayed, saying that Palestinian stateity should be part of a final agreement that resolves the conflict of decades of the Middle East.
Recognition ads are largely symbolic and are rejected by Israel.
A solution of two states would see a state of Palestine created next to Israel in the majority or all Western West Bank, the Gaza Strip with the war and the Jerusalem this annexed, the Israel territories seized the War of the Middle East of 1967 that the Palestinians want for their state.
Albanese dismissed the suggestions on Monday that the measure was only symbolic.
“This is a practical contribution to develop impulse,” he said. “This is not Australia acting alone.”
Albanese had discussed Australia’s decision with the leaders of Great Britain, France, New Zealand and Japan, he said. He also had a “long discussion” with Netanyahu this month, he added.
In neighboring New Zealand, Foreign Minister Winston Peters said his government “will carefully weigh his position” by recognizing a Palestinian state before making a formal decision in September.
“New Zealand has been clear for some time that our recognition of a Palestinian state is a matter of when, not if,” Peters said in a statement.
Different reactions to Albanese’s announcement
After Albanese’s announcement on Monday, Israel’s envoy to Australia said the measure undermined Israel’s security.
“Recognizing a Palestinian state now, Australia raises the position of Hamas, a group that recognizes as a terrorist organization,” Amir Maimon published in X.
“This commitment eliminates any incentive or diplomatic pressure so that the Palestinians do the things that have always been filed in the path of the conflict,” said the spokesman for the Executive Council of the Australian Jewish Jewish Alex Ryvchin in a statement.
Meanwhile, the president of the Palestinian Defense Network of Australia, Nasser Mashni, denounced Albanese’s recognition as too late and “completely meaningless” while the country continues to trade with Israel.
He told journalists in Melbourne on Monday that the measure would do nothing to put an end to the “ongoing genocide in Gaza that has been broadcast live throughout the world for two years.”
