Tokyo – McDonald’s Japan has canceled a Happy Meal campaign that came with the coveted Pokémon cards, apologizing after the resellers rushed to buy the meals and then discarded the food, leaving garbage out of stores.

The meals, called happy sets in Japan, were for children. They came with a toy, like a small plastic pikachu and a Pokémon card. They sold out in one day, according to Japanese media reports.

Wasted food mounds were found near stores.

“We do not believe in abandoning and rule out food. This situation goes against our philosophy for a long time that we have appreciated as a restaurant to” offer a fun gastronomic experience for children and families. “We sincerely accept that our preparations had not been adequate,” said the company in a statement on Monday.

McDonald’s said he was working on ways to prevent such a situation from happening again, such as limiting the amount of foods that each person can buy and end the orders online. He said he could deny service to customers who do not comply with the rules.

“We promise to return to the basic concepts of what is behind the happy whole, which is about helping to bring smiles to families so that we can contribute to the healthy development of the hearts and bodies of children, which are our future,” said the company.

Pokemon card collection is popular among adults and children in many places, with the most popular cards sold for $ 1,000 or more.

They saw unusually large crowds going mass at McDonald’s stores when Pokémon cards went on sale. Later, the cards were relieved by tens of thousands of yen (hundreds of dollars) online.

According to the News French news agency, people went to social networks mass to complain of long lines at the points of sale of McDonald’s, with not verified photos of plastic bags full of hamburgers and fries without eating.

Some called him the “unhappy meals” campaign.

“I couldn’t buy a happy food for my daughter due to these people,” said a publication.

“I am sure that there are adult Pokémon fans who really want letters, but these resellers are really shameful,” said another.

McDonald’s has been selling happy meals for more than 40 years. In Japan, they are generally sold for 510 yen ($ 3.40).
