What is a chocolate cyst? Bindi Irwin’s health condition and what to know about it

Bindi Irwin recently shared an emotional publication on Instagram about his recovery after 13 years of suffering with endometriosis.

In the publication, the conservationist of Wildlife, 27, listed all the things that a doctor eliminated surgically to provide relief.

“Fifty -an endometriosis lesions, a chocolate cyst and my appendix were eliminated,” he revealed.

What is a chocolate cyst?

While it is not a widely known term, a “chocolate cyst” is a symptom of a more severe version of endometriosis, a condition in which the tissues similar to those aligned in the uterus grow out of the organ, according to the Cleveland clinic.

In addition to causing painful periods and pelvic discomfort, endometriosis can also affect fertility.

When the fabric joins an ovary, it is called Endometrioma, says the Cleveland clinic.

The tissue becomes cysts full of dark liquid and reddish brown that resembles melted chocolate, hence the name of “chocolate cyst”.

These growth can join other organs and cause pain and discomfort. They can also be an indicator in a more serious way of endometriosis, according to official health databases.

Experts estimate that about 10% of people who menstruate have endometriosis, and around 17% to 44% develop ovarian endometriomas.

Endometriomas can vary in very small to very large size, and can be formed in one or both ovaries, the states of the Cleveland clinic.

The most common signs of the condition are the painful period cramps, pain during sexual intercourse or, when urinating, urinating more frequent, back pain, nausea, vomiting and swelling.

Not all cysts must be eliminated. In cases of smaller cysts, health professionals can monitor them and reassess if the symptoms become more painful.
