The centers for the control and prevention of diseases of the United States (CDC) warn that Chinese travelers face an “improved” risk of contracting a virus spread by mosquitoes.

There has been an outbreak of Chikungunya in the province of Guangdong, which can cause fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling and eruption.

Recently, the CDC raised the warning related to Chikungunya in China from level 1: “usual precautions of practice” to level 2: “Improved practice precautions”.

CDC say there are no medications to treat Chikungunya, and recommends preventing it using insect repellent, using long sleeves and pants, or staying in places that have air conditioning or screens in the windows and doors.

The department also recommends that travelers go to an area with an outbreak obtain the Chikungunya vaccine, with the exception of pregnant women.

Pregnant women are urged to reconsider traveling to areas with an outbreak “particularly if you are close to giving birth to their baby.”

Future mothers can pass the virus to their children, especially if they are close to the term, and infected newborns face the risk of “serious diseases, including bad long -term results.”

Newborns can be infected through the uterus or by a mosquito sting after they are born.

“In general, chikungunya vaccination must be deferred until after delivery, the CDC said in their release.” However, when the risk of infection is high and the exposure cannot be avoided, pregnant travelers should discuss with their health provider, potential risks (for themselves and their babies) of Chikungunya virus infections and the potential benefits and vaccination risks, so that vaccination can be considered.

Travelers are advised to seek medical attention if they develop fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, joint swelling or eruption.
