Lansing, Mich. (AP) – A Judge of Michigan dismissed the criminal charges on Tuesday against a group of people accused of trying falsely certifying President Donald Trump as the winner of the 2020 elections in the battlefield state, a great blow to prosecutors as similar cases in four other states have been confused with the setbacks.

The Judge of the Kristen D. Simmons District Court said at a judicial hearing that the 15 accused Republicans will not face trial. The case has been dragged by the courts since Michigan’s attorney general, Dana Nessel, a Democrat, announced the charges more than two years ago.

Each group member, which included some high profile members of the Republican Party in Michigan, faced eight positions of falsification and conspiracy to commit electoral forgery. The main charges for serious crimes involved a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.

The researchers said the group met at the headquarters of the Republican Party of Michigan in December 2020 and signed a falsely document that said they were the “duly elected and qualified voters of the State.”

The voters are part of the electoral school of 538 members who officially elect the president of the United States. In 48 states, voters vote for the candidate who won the popular vote. In Nebraska and Maine, the votes of the electorals are granted according to the Congress district and the state results.

An accused man in the case of Michigan caused the charges against him to fall after he agreed to cooperate with the office of the State Attorney General in October 2023. The other 15 defendants declared themselves innocent and have argued that their actions were not illegal.

Judge Simmons took almost a year to say if there was sufficient evidence to take cases to trial after a series of long preliminary hearings.

Prosecutors in Nevada, Georgia, Wisconsin and Arizona have also presented criminal charges related to the false voters scheme. None of the cases have approached the test stage and many have been bogged down by delays in procedures and appeal.

In Nevada, the State Attorney General revived a case against a group of allegedly false voters last year, while a judge in Arizona ordered a case similar to a large jury in May. In Wisconsin last month, a judge refused to dismiss charges for serious crimes against three Trump allies related to a plan to falsely issue the electoral tickets for Trump even though Biden won the State in 2020.

Georgia’s prosecution is essentially waiting, while Fulton County District Prosecutor, Fani Willis in Atlanta, who presented the charges against President Trump and others appeal his removal of the case. Technically, Trump remains a defendant in the case, but as acting president, it is very unlikely that any prosecution against him can proceed while he is in office.

The effort to ensure false voters was fundamental for the federal accusation against Trump that was abandoned earlier this year shortly before Trump assumed the position of his second mandate.
