The western Nile virus is emerging in the United States this summer, with infections that extend approximately 40% higher than normal, according to new reports.

The virus extends more commonly to people through the sting of an infected mosquito, although the disease cycle also includes infected birds. When mosquitoes feed on infected birds, they can collect the virus and transmit it to humans.

There have been approximately 770 human cases in the US. In early September, with almost 500 classified as severe, according to the latest data from the centers for disease control and prevention, which traces the cases informed by state health departments.

That is approximately 40% higher than the average number of cases reported at this point in previous years (around 550 in total and 350 that qualify as severe), according to CDC data.

Most cases of the western Nile are reported in August and September.

The official report emphasized that these data are still preliminary. Many soft infections are not reported, there is often a delay before all severe cases are confirmed.

It is the increase of these last symptoms that is causing concern. People over 50 or those with committed immune systems have a higher risk, the precaution of experts.

The Western Nile virus first identified in Africa in 1937, with the first European outbreak in 1996. He arrived in the United States in 1999, when an outbreak in New York sent 62 people to the hospital for two months, according to the data.

Avoid mosquito bites is the first line of defense. Health officials recommend wearing long -sleeved clothes; applying insect repellent (especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are more active); and ensure that the window screens are safe.
