James Van Der Beek surprised fans on Monday by making a virtual appearance at a “Dawson’s Creek” meeting after having previously abandoned the charity event due to a disease.

The images of the event, which was held at the Richard Rodgers Theater in New York, shows the actor, who made public with his diagnosis of colorectal cancer last year, thanking the attendees for their support while expressing regrets for their absence.

“I’ve been waiting tonight for months and months since my Angel Michelle Williams said he was putting together. I can’t believe he is not there,” he said. “I can’t believe I can’t see my cast partners, my beautiful cast in person.”

“I want to stop on that stage and thank each person in the theater for being here tonight,” he continued. “From the cast to the team to all who are doing anything and have been so generous, and especially each of you, are the best fans in the world.”

Van Der Beek introduced Lin-Manuel Miranda, who had intervened as his last minute replacement for the event.

“In ‘Dawson’s Creek’, I had no substitute, but this is Broadway, and I needed one. So we thought we would try to find someone who would never have studied in this theater before,” he joked, referring to Miranda’s performance at the musical smash “Hamilton”, which has been touched at the Richard Rodgers theater since 2015.

The plans for a “Dawson’s Creek” meeting were confirmed for the first time last month. The event had a live table that reads the pilot episode of the Drama Teen Drama series, and was to mark the first public appearance of Van der Beek with co -star Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson and Williams since the program ended his six -seasons career in 2003.

Although Van Der Beek, 48, has maintained a lower profile since he announced his diagnosis, the actor recently had a well -received guest role in “compensating in excess,” starring Benito Skinner.
