Former President Barack Obama just called out the blatant hypocrisy surrounding President Donald Trump’s growing campaign to send National Guard troops to crack down on American cities.

During Monday’s episode of Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, Obama imagined how the right would have reacted if he had taken a similar measure targeting Republican-led states and cities during his term.

“If I had sent the National Guard to Texas and just said, ‘You know what, there’s a lot of problems in Dallas, a lot of crime there, and I don’t care what happens.’ [Texas Gov. Greg] Abbott says. “I’m going to take over law enforcement, because I think things are out of control.” It’s mind-blowing to me how News would have responded,” Obama told Maron.

The Democrat also explained why he has always believed it is vital to maintain a barrier between the military and those at the top of government, whether at home or abroad.

“It wasn’t controversial for me to go to other countries and say, ‘You know what? It’s a good idea for the military to be under civilian control,’ because when you have the military that can direct force against its own people, that’s inherently corrupting,” he explained.

Reminding the audience that the posse comitatus law already exists, a century-old piece of legislation that restricts leaders from using “our military on home soil” except in an extreme emergency, Obama said it is difficult to see how deploying troops within our own country is anything more than “a genuine effort to undermine the way we have understood democracy.”

“And both Democrats and Republicans understood that,” he continued.

Obama first warned how dangerous it could be for democracy to deploy troops on the homeland after Trump ordered National Guard troops to Washington, DC, in August.

“The erosion of basic principles such as due process and the increasing use of our military on home soil puts the freedoms of all Americans at risk and should concern both Democrats and Republicans,” he posted on X, formerly Twitter.
