Scott and Mark Hoying share how they wrote their dream of becoming parents into a reality
As he continues to show off his fancy footwork on “Dancing With the Stars,” Scott Hoying celebrates a deeply personal milestone.
The Pentatonix singer revealed on Tuesday’s episode of the ABC competition series that he and husband Mark Hoying are expecting their first child together via surrogate. That same day, the two men also documented the moment they found out they were about to become parents in a sweet video, set to the song “Turning Page” by Sydney Rose, on social media.
The Hoyings, who have been married for more than two years, have openly expressed their desire to start a family for some time now. Last month, they offered a glimpse into their future by unveiling a new children’s book, “Fa La La Family,” in which they depict themselves celebrating Christmas with their own son. “We always try to integrate our part and our heart into everything we do, because it immortalizes the memories we have, so we wanted to include our families in the book,” Scott told News. “Family can mean more than just the conventional sense of the word. We’re both part of the queer community, so one of our goals was to make people who might not be coming home for Christmas feel included too.”
To accompany the book, the Hoyings also released a joint album, “MYFAMILY,” featuring children’s collaborations with musicians Béla Fleck and Meghan Trainor. The lead single from the album is a Christmas song also titled “Fa La La Family,” which features excerpts from the book set to music.
“It sums up how much love there is between us in our family and in our chosen family,” Mark said. “We’re entering this new phase of our lives, so I can already imagine having this playing in the background while we put the kids to bed or have dance parties in the kitchen. I’m so excited to have this be the soundtrack to our lives as we start raising our little ones.”

Both Scott and Mark acknowledge that “Fa La La Family” and “MYFAMILY” have arrived at a time when many members of the LGBTQ+ community are justifiably concerned about the rollback of their rights in the current sociopolitical climate.
If both the book and the album can “make even one child feel more confident,” Scott says he and Mark will feel accomplished.
“I didn’t know many gay people growing up. I felt imperfect and didn’t want to tell anyone,” he explained. “[But] I feel like it made me a stronger and more empathetic person. It’s so profound how important representation is, because that’s what makes people understand a human experience that they wouldn’t normally understand. “We’re trying to move the needle that way.”
That mission also extends to Scott’s current stage on “Dancing With the Stars,” in which he is partnered with dancer Rylee Arnold. Fans who remember the viral footage from the Hoyings’ wedding, in which Scott confidently strutted through a medley of Blackpink songs, would be surprised to know that he’s never had any formal dance training in the past.

“I’ve never taken dance classes, but I love learning choreography, so I’ll be learning TikToks all the time in my room, with the blinds closed,” she said. “And there’s less pressure, because I’m not a professional dancer. So I’m like, ‘Whatever happens, happens.'” “I’m going to do the best I can.”
Amid his flurry of personal projects, Scott also hit the studio with Pentatonix for a new album. The Grammy-winning vocal quintet’s eighth Christmas song, “Christmas in the City,” will be released on October 24 and will begin a U.S. tour next month.
Although Mark acknowledges that he and his husband haven’t had much free time lately, he wouldn’t have it any other way, especially now that he’s looking forward to the holidays.

“Everything seems to be happening exactly as it should,” he said. “On any path to starting a family, there are challenges along the way. But Scott has made me feel so loved throughout the entire process that I am even more excited to be on this journey with him.”
