Bernie Sanders surprises by calling Marjorie Taylor Greene a good Republican

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) argued this week that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is one of the “good” Republicans, despite their different views.

during a CNN Town Hall On Wednesday, an audience member asked Sanders which Republicans he thinks he can work with to reopen the government. The Vermont senator responded that he could “name several of them” before specifically naming Greene.

“There are some decent, honest Republicans,” Sanders began. “And you know, in American society we believe in democracy. You’re a conservative Republican. We don’t agree. So what? It’s called the United States. We have different points of view.”

The former Democratic presidential candidate went on to say that he is concerned about Republicans “d“It’s not so much about representing your districts and states as it is about simply pledging allegiance to the president of the United States.”

But then he offered his unexpected praise to Greene.

“But there’s someone like Marjorie Taylor Greene who says, ‘You know what? I was elected by my constituents, I’m beholden to them, not the president or America. So there are good Republicans out there,'” Sanders added.

Sanders appeared to be referencing a comment Greene made in an NBC News interview earlier this month.

“I’m not some kind of blind slave to the president, and I don’t think anyone should be,” Greene said. “I serve in Congress. We are a separate branch of government and I am not chosen by the president.”

And she added: “I am not elected by anyone who works in the White House. I am elected by my district. That is what I work for, and I was elected without the support of the president, and I think that has been very useful to me.”

Sanders then lamented the way Trump constantly threatens Republican lawmakers.

“Yeah [President] Trump would leave them alone for five minutes and not threaten them with a primary, if they stood up and did the right thing, I think we can move forward,” Sanders argued.

“I am not following the party line on this, nor playing loyalty games…I am carving my own path,” he wrote. “Not a single Republican in leadership has talked to us about this or given us a plan to help Americans deal with their DOUBLED health insurance premiums!!!”

While she hasn’t hesitated to publicly hold her own party accountable, Greene continues to attack Democrats, writing, “DEMOCRATS created the health care crisis in America in 2010 by passing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare,” in an Oct. 12 X post.

Elsewhere in the CNN town hall, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who appeared alongside Sanders, was apparently not as enthusiastic about Greene.

When asked if Greene was someone she could see herself working with, the New York lawmaker asked with a laugh: “On what?”

She added that “people can talk well, but until they actually support policies that help people, I’m not particularly interested.”
