FBI Director Kash Patel said Sunday that the agency launched an investigation into an apparent “elevated hunting position within line of sight of the landing zone of Air Force One” at Palm Beach International Airport discovered by the U.S. Secret Service during security checks before President Donald Trump’s arrival last week.

In an interview with News Digital, Patel said the FBI is investigating the discovery but has not linked anyone to the scene.

“Prior to the president’s return to West Palm Beach, the USSS discovered what appeared to be an elevated fighter post within line of sight of Air Force One’s landing zone,” he told the outlet. “The FBI has since taken the lead in the investigation.”

Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said his agents “identified items of interest” near the airport while conducting “comprehensive technological and physical walkthroughs” before Trump’s arrival. The agency is also assisting the FBI investigation.

A senior official familiar with the investigation told NBC News that this is not the typical landing site for Air Force One, but that the president’s plane has been parking in that area due to ongoing construction.

Trump traveled to Palm Beach on Friday afternoon and spent the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate, before returning to the White House on Sunday. The president had not commented on the discovery as of Monday morning.

Trump survived two assassination attempts in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election, including one at a Butler, Pennsylvania, rally that summer, when a bullet wounded one of his ears. An aide was killed in the attack, while the Secret Service killed the shooter.

Less than two months later, he was attacked while playing golf at his West Palm Beach club with a man pointing a rifle at him through the bushes bordering the course. The man, who was discovered by the Secret Service before he had a chance to attack the president, leading to his arrest, has been found guilty of all charges he faced and is due to be sentenced on December 18.
