It is the video that caused a literal international incident.
On Thursday night, President Donald Trump was infuriated by a new $75 million ad campaign launched by the Ontario government to reject his tariffs on Canada.
“Based on his egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social website in response to the announcement.
The video, which airs on major networks in the United States, uses excerpts from a 1987 radio speech by then-President Ronald Reagan in which he spoke against tariffs and warned of the damage they cause.
“Markets contract and collapse, businesses and industries close, and millions of people lose their jobs,” Reagan said.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute said in X that the ad uses “selective audio” and “misrepresents” what he said. He also hinted at legal action against Ontario.
In the full speech, Reagan actually justifies the tariffs he imposed on Japanese semiconductors. However, he also said he “hates” resorting to tariffs and speaks in favor of free trade and against protectionism.
Trump called the video “fake,” which it is not, and claimed Canada was trying to “interfere” with the U.S. Supreme Court, which will hear oral arguments on Trump’s tariffs in November.

The video includes a plug-in to a webpage created by Ontario to highlight the ways trade with Canada helps American workers and how Trump’s tariffs will have “harsh and immediate effects,” including higher prices and job losses.
