Gavin Newsom admits his next political ambition… as if it were so

After watching a video of the governor greeting people in the Republican-majority state of South Carolina, Robert Costa asked him if he plans to “seriously think” about the possibility of a 2028 presidential run after the upcoming midterm election cycle.

“Yes, otherwise I’d be lying. I’d just be lying. And no, I can’t do that,” Newsom admitted, adding that he still has several years left before he has to officially commit to a campaign.

“Fate will determine that,” he said.

The governor is scheduled to leave Sacramento in January 2027, and California’s term limits will eliminate the option of another statewide election.

Already a big name in Democratic politics, Newsom’s profile has only risen since he positioned himself as one of President Donald Trump’s staunchest critics during his second term.

However, that doesn’t mean Newsom is ignoring the nuts and bolts of electoral politics. In an effort to counter gerrymandering efforts in red states like Texas, he helped put a blue-leaning redistricting plan on California ballots in a special election this year.

Despite his strong name recognition and a respectable political resume, the governor told Costa that the idea of ​​a presidential run still seemed like a mind-boggling possibility for someone who once struggled to finish school.

“I have no idea. The idea that a kid who got a 960 on his SAT, who still has trouble reading scripts, was always in the back of the classroom,” Newsom said, referring to his dyslexia diagnosis. “The idea that that can be ruled out is, in itself, extraordinary.”

“Who the hell knows?” he added. “I’m looking forward to who’s running in 2028 and who’s running then. That’s the question for the American people.”
