1) Disable background app refresh
Prevent apps from consuming power when you’re not using them. Even when you’re not actively scrolling or tapping, many apps continue to run in the background, fetching updates, refreshing data, and sending notifications. It’s convenient, but it drains your battery faster than you think.
For iPhone
- Gonna Settings.
- Tap General.
- Click Background app refresh.
- Tap Background app refresh again.
- Select Offor choose wifi to limit data usage and battery consumption.
- You can also disable the update to individual applications if you still want some to run.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery (or Battery and Device Care, Power Management or similar).

- Choose the apps you rarely use and then set them as Restricted or optimizedeither Put unused apps to sleep.
- To allow Android to manage this automatically, turn on Adaptive battery (found under Settings › Battery › Adaptive battery).
For advice: Keep essential apps like messaging, navigation, or weather active so they can update in real time. Restricting background activity for apps you don’t open frequently can extend your battery life by several hours a day.

2) Disable always-on display
That fancy watch on your screen may look cool, but it’s constantly draining power. Always-on display keeps the screen partially lit, even when you’re not touching it, to show the time, notifications, or widgets. Over time, that adds up, especially overnight.
For iPhone (14 Pro and later)
- Gonna Settings.
- Tap Screen and brightness.
- Click Always on display.
- Lever Off next to Always on display to prevent your phone from turning on when locked.
For Android
YesSettings may vary depending on the manufacturer of your Android phone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Lock screen (sometimes labeled as “Lock Screen & Security”, “Lock Screen & AOD”, “Lock Screen & Screen”, etc.).
- Look for Always on display (AOD) (or similar, such as “Always show time and information”, “Ambient display”, “Always on display when locked”).
- Lever Off to disable the AOD completely, either Choose an alternative mode (for example: “Tap to show” / “Show on touch” so that the AOD only appears when you touch the screen) if available.
- (Optional) Some devices allow AOD to be scheduled or limited when notifications are present. If you want more control, explore the sub-options in the AOD settings.
Turning off always-on display can extend standby battery life by up to 10 to 15%.

3) Limit access to location
GPS is one of the biggest hidden battery drains. Apps that track your location in the background, from ride-sharing to retail, can silently drain your phone’s power even when you’re not using them. Adjusting permissions keeps your phone safe and efficient.
For iPhone
- Gonna Settings.
- Tap Privacy and security.
- Click Location services.
- Touch each application individually and change Always to While using the app either Never.
- Now, scroll to the bottom and tap System services.
- Tap Important locationsthen toggle it Off to prevent your iPhone from storing detailed location and travel history. (You can also touch “Clear history” here to delete past entries.)
For Android
YesSettings may vary depending on the manufacturer of your Android phone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location (or sometimes Privacy and security → Location).
- Tap Application permissions (either App location permissions, Location permissions for apps).
- Select an applicationthen choose the appropriate permission, such as “Allow only while using the application” (either “Allow only when in use”) either “Do not allow” (either “Deny”).
- On the same screen (for that app), you may see a switch to “Use precise location”. If the app does not require GPS accuracy, toggle Off to allow you to use only an approximate location.
Apps like Maps and Weather need access, but most don’t. Adjusting these settings not only increases battery life, but also improves your privacy by limiting background tracking.
For advice: Leaving essential features like Find My iPhone or Emergency Calls and SOS enabled in System Services ensures that your phone can still help you locate or protect you if you lose it, even with other location options disabled.

4) Disable Raise to wake and Tap to wake
Have you ever noticed that your screen lights up when you simply pick up your phone? Those quick flashes add up. Every time the screen wakes up, even for a second, it consumes battery power. Disabling these motion-activated features can reduce unnecessary screen activations.
For iPhone
- Gonna Settings.
- Tap Screen and brightness.
- Turn off Get up to wake up.
For Android
YesSettings may vary depending on the manufacturer of your Android phone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Show (either Lock screen and securityeither advanced features, depending on your device).
- Look for Lift/lift to wake up, Touch to wake upeither Double tap to wake up (sometimes found in Gestures or Motion settings).
- Fold off “Lift/Raise to wake” and “Tap/Double tap to wake” (or choose to disable whichever is active).
- If you want an easier way to wake up your phone only when you want, trust wake up with power button (which is the default on almost all phones).
5) Check battery usage and spot the culprits
If your phone is draining faster than usual, the Battery Usage tool can reveal the exact cause. You’ll see which apps are using the most power, both on screen and in the background, so you can take action.
For iPhone
- Gonna Settings.
- Play Drums.
- Scroll to see the battery usage graph and a list of applications and system processes that use power.
- look for any highlighted items (indicating unusually high usage).
- Touch a application or process to see more details about its usage and background activity.
- If you notice that an app is continually consuming power in the background, consider limiting your background activity either uninstall it if not necessary.
For Android
YesSettings may vary depending on the manufacturer of your Android phone.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery (either Battery and device care, Power and batterydepending on your device).
- Tap Battery usage either Battery usage per app (or similar).
- View the list of apps and sort or filter by Application use either screen time, if available, to identify major battery consumers.
- Touch a high drainage applicationthen choose something like Restrict background usage, Optimizeeither Do not allow background activity (depending on the options your phone offers).
The most common culprits of battery drain include social media apps, streaming apps, location-based apps, and apps with heavy background refresh behavior. Checking this every few weeks can help catch new drainage early.
Bonus: check the health of your battery
If your phone is still draining quickly after these fixes, your battery may be aging. Both iPhones and Android devices offer built-in diagnostics to check battery health and capacity.
For iPhone
- Gonna Aju stes.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery status and charge (In some older versions, it may simply be “Battery Status.”)
- On the Battery Status screen, look at the Maximum Capacity percentage. This tells you how the battery’s current capacity compares to when it was new.
- If the percentage is well below ~80%it may be a good time to replace the battery to restore performance and capacity. (Apple notes that the batteries are designed to retain about 80% of their original capacity over 500 full charge cycles under ideal conditions.)
For Android
YesSettings may vary depending on the manufacturer of your Android phone.
- Gonna Settings.
- Play Drums (or “Battery and device care”, “Power and battery”, depending on your phone).
- Look for an operation called Battery status, Battery capacity, Battery status either Battery information. Note: This may not appear on all phones.
- If the built-in health indicator is not available, you can open hidden test menu by dialing *#*#4636#*#* in the Phone app. If “Battery Information” appears, you may see statistics such as status, capacity, or cycle count.
- If your battery status or capacity is displayed as “Reduced” either significantly lower than expectedconsider replacing the battery for better performance and longer life.
Replacing an old battery can dramatically improve performance and life, often more than any software modification.
