Tim Allen joked about the similarities between military service and being behind bars while reminiscing about his younger years in a new interview.

The “Home Improvement” actor made a strange comparison while talking about his passion for giving back to military veterans during an appearance Monday on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

“I love helping our veterans, I love everything I can do,” he said, while giving a shout out to the Wounded Warriors Project, a nonprofit that helps veterans and their families.

“I should have gone to the military instead of jail,” continued Allen, who served two years in prison for drug trafficking when he was 20 years old. “I had a choice and prison is the path I chose.”

He then reflected on how the two experiences may have more in common than people think, saying, “It’s the same kind of thing: the food is a little weird and you have to wear a uniform and all that.”

In a 2021 interview on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, the “Shifting Gears” star said his time in prison taught him a certain type of discipline, like how to keep his head down and stay in line.

“I just shut up and did what I was told,” Allen explained. “It was the first time I did what I was told and played… I literally learned to live day to day. And I learned to shut up. You definitely want to learn to shut up.”
