President Donald Trump intervened in some high-profile state and local elections this week by telling his supporters to vote Republican or else.

The president issued the direct message, all in capital letters, on his Truth Social website the night before Election Day.

“VIRGINIA AND NEW JERSEY, REMEMBER THIS: A VOTE FOR A REPUBLICAN MEANS SUBSTANTIALLY LOWER ENERGY PRICES, A VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT, ESPECIALLY THESE TWO LOSERS WHO ARE RUNNING, MEANS DOUBLE, TRIPLE, AND EVEN QUADRUPLE YOUR COSTS ENERGY,” he wrote on Monday. “IT WILL NOT BE SUSTAINABLE, AND YOU WILL REGRET THE DAY YOU VOTED TO DESTROY YOUR LIFE! NOT VOTING TOMORROW IS THE SAME AS VOTING FOR A DEMOCRAT.”

Trump himself has made a notable exception by endorsing Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat running as an independent, for mayor of New York over his Republican opponent, Curtis Sliwa.

In a separate Truth Social post, the president suggested that voting for Sliwa would only benefit his Democratic rival, Zohran Mamdani.

He also harshly criticized Mamdani, a self-identified democratic socialist, calling him a “communist candidate” before threatening to withhold funding from New York if Mamdani was victorious on Tuesday, as numerous polls had predicted.

“Their principles have been tested for over a thousand years, and have never succeeded. I would rather see a Democrat, who has had a track record of success, WIN, than a communist with no experience and a track record of COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE,” he wrote. “He was nothing as an assemblyman, ranked last in the class, and as mayor of potentially, again, the largest city in the world, HE HAS NO CHANCE to return it to its former glory!”

On Tuesday, Trump went even further, claiming that any Jewish New Yorker who votes for Mamdani is “a stupid person.”

A New York Times report published in August suggested that Cuomo and Trump had a warmer relationship now than during Cuomo’s decade-long tenure as New York governor and had held a call about the election. That same month, Cuomo told supporters at a fundraiser that he felt good about having Trump’s support, according to Politico.

Meanwhile, Mamdani has used the president’s endorsement of Cuomo as a point of attack.

“In these last few days, what was rumored, what was feared, has become naked and brazen,” he told reporters earlier this week. “The MAGA movement’s embrace of Andrew Cuomo reflects Donald Trump’s realization that this would be the best mayor for him.”
