Gwyneth Paltrow opens up about a major change in her life: I wake up filled with dread
Gwyneth Paltrow spoke candidly on Tuesday about her mental health struggles after living a “very intense life in the public eye for a long, long time.”
During Tuesday’s episode of “the sticky podcast”, the veteran actor spoke about feeling like he is in his “hormonal phase of life” right now at 53 years old.
“I have a lot of anxiety for the first time in my life,” Paltrow told moderator Zanna Roberts Rassi.
“I think it’s an estrogen dominance thing. It makes you very anxious,” the “Marty Supreme” star continued. “So part of this is physiological, part psychological, part emotional and part of his public life.”
Paltrow, the daughter of showbiz parents (actress Blythe Danner and director Bruce Paltrow), attributed her newfound anxiety to being in the public eye for decades. He started acting at 17 years old.
“And I think every time we’re at the mercy of people’s opinions and all the energy behind opinions (I’m very sensitive, like most of us), I feel that and that kind of wears out my nervous system,” Paltrow said.
The goop founder went on to say that “the last few years [have] Hit me so hard,” before detailing that she has been dealing with intrusive thoughts in addition to her anxiety.
“But I know something is wrong because my cortisol level [stress hormone] “…like I’m going to go to bed exhausted and my heart starts racing,” Paltrow added. “And then I’ll have intrusive thoughts, which I’ve never had in my life… My sleep is still pretty good, but sometimes I wake up first thing in the morning and I’m filled with dread.”
Paltrow revealed that even a negative work email can feel like “a slap in the face.”
“So I would really like to reconfigure myself so that average or bad news doesn’t feel so terrible,” he said.

Noting that he’s “never been who I am” and that he “has a lot of parts,” he added that he “definitely” thinks “there’s a big nervous system component” to his symptoms.
Elsewhere in the interview, Gwyneth talked about visiting two therapists, one of whom is a nervous system specialist, for support, as well as finding peace of mind by spending time with her husband and children.
“And then I get a lot of healing from my family, from my children and from my husband,” she said. “If I can be with everyone, especially if my four children (my stepchildren and my children), my husband and I, if we are under the same roof, my nervous system calms down.”
The “Iron Man” star also credited the “amazing friends” and “amazing women” in her life for supporting her.
Paltrow married director Brad Falchuk in 2018. She shares daughter Apple and son Moses with her ex-husband, Coldplay musician Chris Martin. Paltrow is also stepmother to Falchuk’s children, Isabella and Brody, whom he shares with his ex-wife, Suzanne Bukinik.
Meanwhile, the Oscar winner said she’s working to be “more intentional” in her daily life.
“I think I have a little bit of ADD and I can really feel pulled in a lot of directions. I think I would love to try not to do that as much and feel more grounded throughout the day,” she added.

The term attention deficit disorder (ADD) is an outdated medical term previously used to describe a mental health condition characterized by difficulties with attention, concentration, and impulsivity. Later, in 1987, the term ADD was changed to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
