Jonathan Groff might have a more energetic Thanksgiving if his NSFW admission on NBC’s “Today” is any indication.

Groff will perform Thursday with the cast of Broadway’s “Just in Time” at the 2025 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. However, appearing on Monday’s “Today with Jenna & Friends,” the Tony-winning actor broke into laughter as he shared details about his outfit for the occasion.

“I’m going to brave the cold in the costume,” Groff said. “I have decided not to wear underwear.”

Taking note of the mistake instantly, he quickly clarified: “Anything extra underwear”.

Despite the attempt to correct course, guest host Andy Cohen joked about what could happen if Groff opted for the “free ball” during the show, before telling the actor, “You need long underwear!”

“I don’t know if we say ‘free ball’ on morning TV,” host Jenna Bush Hager joked then.

Groff is promoting the filmed version of the 2023 Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” which hits theaters next week. Both he and Daniel Radcliffe received Tony Awards for their performances in the musical, which also starred Lindsay Mendez.

Now through March, Broadway fans can see Groff in the musical “Just in Time,” in which he plays pop singer Bobby Darin, best known for his string of 1950s and 1960s hits like “Splish Splash” and “Dream Lover.”

Although it is unknown whether Darin opted for underwear during his performances, Groff has suggested that the legendary singer, who died in 1973 aged 37, had some steamy secrets.

“This guy is fire. He’s an incredible performer and really special,” Groff said during an appearance on Andrew Chappelle and Cody Rigsby’s “Tactful Pettiness” podcast last year. “I read a book about him, where he talked about his relationship with the audience. He, for example, used a condom when he went on stage in case he ejaculated.”

And when Groff began working on “Just in Time,” he said, he felt equally excited: “I felt tingly.”
