Michelle Obama sums up Donald Trump

Until Trump’s planned demolition for the construction of a new ballroom began last month, the east wing served as the traditional office for her former first lady.

Obama sees the destruction rather as a “loss for us as a nation,” he told podcaster Jamie Kern Lima on Tuesday. Still, she shared how the news affected her physically.

“I think there was confusion in my body, because I thought: Who are we? What do we value? And who decides that?” Obama said. “That’s what’s been on my mind a lot lately. Who are we? What are the rules? Because I’m confused by… what are our rules and customs? Not the laws, but how do we live together? That’s the part that hurts.”

He added that he felt the loss primarily for the United States because, “personally, You know… that’s not our house. “That is the people’s house.”

Obama also referred to the East Wing’s place in American history when speaking with Stephen Colbert earlier this month, saying it was “where life happened.”

She explained: “The West Wing was work. Sometimes it was sadness, it was trouble, it was the bowels of the White House, and the East Wing was where you felt light. That’s where the kids came. We had puppies.”

In an appearance a few days later at the Howard Gilman Opera House at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Obama said the current state of the East Wing reflects how Trump feels about the first lady’s role in his administration.

“When we talk about the East Wing, it’s the heart of the job,” Obama said. “And denigrating it, tearing it down, pretending it doesn’t matter, is a reflection of how you think about that role.”
