Senator Mark Kelly shares video of
Senator Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) actually agrees with Pete Hegseth – or, to be more specific, a 2016 version of the Secretary of Defense.
Tuesday, Kelly posted a clip on X from his recent appearance on CNN‘s “Erin Burnett at the helm”.
The clip Kelly chose included an old… and now viral — video of Hegseth speaking very frankly about the military’s obligation to refuse orders that violate the law at an event organized by what was then called the Silicon Valley Conservative Forum in April 2016.

Hegseth’s throwback video appears to have gone viral thanks to The September 2 Hegseth Double Hit Controversyan act many say it was probably a war crime.
“I think there have to be consequences for heinous war crimes,” Hegseth said at the 2016 event. “If you’re doing something that is completely illegal and callous, then there is a consequence for that.”
“That’s why the military said they will not follow illegal orders from their commander in chief,” Hegseth continued. “There is a standard, there is a spirit. There is a belief that we are above so many things that our enemies or others would do.”

Last month, veteran Democrats and former intelligence officials (including Kelly) released a video urging service members to confront President Donald Trump’s administration if they receive “unlawful orders.” The video received a rather hostile response from Trump, who condemned it as “THIRSTY BEHAVIOR” on social media and appeared to endorse a post that called for legislators will be executed.

Hegseth responded to the Democrats’ video by saying posting a tweet last week That said, Kelly, a retired Navy fighter pilot, was facing an investigation because he is the only one in that group who formally retired from the military and remains under Pentagon jurisdiction.
“Pete Hegseth says he’s court-martialing me for saying the exact same thing he said 9 years ago,” Kelly he said in the caption of his tweet that included the Hegseth clip in 2016. “What changed for Pete? Well, for starters, he spends all day thinking about how he can play into Trump’s hands. When Trump says jump, he says how high.”
The retired astronaut expanded on this during his conversation with Burnett on CNN on Tuesday.
“Well, Erin, I think you’re right. And that’s exactly what us said,” Kelly said of Hegseth’s video from 2016. “But when we said it, Pete Hegseth now said, eight years later or… nine years later, he says, what we said was false and reckless. And I think the question arises: What has changed?”
He continued: “And it’s pretty obvious that what’s changed is that we have an unqualified Secretary of Defense who only cares about pleasing this president and being loyal to this president. That’s the difference. It’s who the commander in chief is.”
