House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries He criticized President Donald Trump’s claims that he will “govern” Venezuela after attacking the country and ″“captured” their leader.

“Donald Trump claims he will govern Venezuela. He has done a terrible job running the United States of America,” Jeffries said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “Life has not gotten better for the American people over the last year; life has gotten worse. He promised to reduce the high cost of living. Costs have not gone down. They have gone up. The health care system is broken. Donald Trump refuses to do anything about it.”

“So the notion that he is going to govern Venezuela and improve the lives of the Venezuelan people, of course, is belied by the facts in terms of what he has done as president here in the United States of America,” Jeffries added.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, appearing on “Meet the Press” earlier Sunday, said Congress was not notified about the U.S. attack on Venezuela until after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were kidnapped over concerns about leaks. However, Jeffries argued that the administration had not provided any evidence as to why the United States even attacked Venezuela.

“Well, there has been no evidence that the administration has presented to justify the actions that were taken, in terms of there being an imminent threat to the health, safety, welfare and national security of the American people,” Jeffries said. “This was not simply an anti-narcotics operation: it was an act of war.”
