Megyn Kelly Dunks on New CBS Evening News Anchor After He Bizarrely Cries on Air

“We need to talk about the new ‘News Evening News’ anchor,” Kelly said of Dokoupil, who faced a difficult first week at his new job and recently made headlines for crying strangely during a recently published news segment.

“There’s no crying on ‘Evening News,'” Kelly said, providing an acceptable exception.

“There can be some crying when a president is shot to death before your very eyes, as we saw with Walter Cronkite… there was, like, wiping your eyes when he took off his glasses to report that JFK had been shot to death,” Kelly said, adding, “That’s as far as it went. That’s as far as most ‘Evening News’ anchors would traditionally have gone.”

But it’s “the dawn of a new day,” Kelly continued, showing a clip of Dokoupil crying when asked why Miami is her “favorite place in the world.”

“I literally couldn’t believe my eyes,” Kelly said, as the clip began.

“I’m excited,” Dokoupil said as he tried to answer the question about Miami while continuing to wipe tears from his eyes.

“To help people understand why I have that reaction,” the host said as he choked up and wiped his eyes. “Florida is where I grew up. My grandmother is here, my father, my mother, my aunts and uncles, my cousins, and it’s where I would have spent my entire childhood, but we left. It was because of my father.”

Dokoupil added: “He got into trouble with business. We laugh about it now, but he was a drug dealer. But the reason it’s so emotional for me is because I feel like I was robbed of the whole Miami experience. So when I come back, I always think…” Then he chokes up and gets emotional again.

“Oh my God,” Kelly said as she put her hands to her head. “I thought for sure the story was going to end with ‘And they all died in a house fire, I was the only survivor,’ in which case I would have excused the many tears that preceded it.”

She continued, “It turns out that the father had some problems. I’m sorry to hear it. The sobbing, the repeated… the shaking voice, the inability to recover, what is that?”

Halperin said of the pre-recorded segment: “Look, it’s the fact that [News] turn it off. I don’t hate anyone who cries for their family. Sometimes I cry when I talk about my family. But I wouldn’t turn it off.”
