The medical senator stutters when asked if

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who voted to confirm Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as secretary of health and human services, was asked by News on Sunday if he regrets that choice.

“I get asked that often, but I prefer not to make it personal like what my feelings are,” Cassidy, who is also a doctor, responded, stuttering slightly, after “News Sunday” host Jacqui Heinrich mentioned the CDC’s recent decision to alter the childhood vaccine schedule under Kennedy. “It should be about the patient’s health.”

Cassidy denounced that the change in the vaccine schedule did not go through the required “scientific review committee” or “by the advisory committee on immunization practices,” adding that the measure “completely bypassed the normal mechanism.”

The change eliminated requirements for vaccine protection against influenza, rotavirus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and some forms of meningitis or RSV, and now only recommends protections against those diseases for certain groups considered high risk.

Elsewhere in the interview, Cassidy sharply criticized the Trump administration for trying to align the United States’ vaccine schedule with Denmark’s.

“Anyone who thinks our country is like Denmark when it comes to the need for vaccines has never really lived with Americans beyond the rich and well-off,” he declared. “And I say this as a doctor who spent 18 years of my life, or 20 years of my life, in a hospital for people with and without health insurance. That is not our country.”

The medical senator argued that if “you know our country where they are [and] “Let’s not imagine that we are like Denmark; you will find that it is actually necessary to have this kind of vaccine schedule.”

After Heinrich asked if the senator is “going to do anything to change” the new vaccine recommendations, Cassidy noted that “current law says the HHS health secretary has the right to do this.”

Speaking of several cases in which children died across the country due to vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, he added: “let’s take care of the people and go beyond their ideology.”

Meanwhile, Kennedy declared in a statement on Monday that “this decision [to drop the number of vaccine recommendations] protects children, respects families and rebuilds trust in public health.”

Cassidy also criticized the change to Kennedy’s vaccine schedule in a Jan. 5 X post, emphasizing that the change will “make America sicker.”

“The vaccine schedule IS NOT A MANDATE. It is a recommendation that gives parents the power,” he wrote.

Cassidy added: “Changing the pediatric vaccine schedule without any scientific input on safety risks and little transparency will cause unnecessary fear for patients and doctors, and will make America sicker.”
