A 6-year-old girl is the only survivor of a family who died in a train accident in Spain and was found after escaping through a broken window

The roar was deafening inside the train car as it left the tracks and then slid down a steep slope, breaking its frame. And then, among the twisted metal of the rubble, the screams of the wounded and the silence of the dead.

The newspaper La Vanguardia reported that a Civil Guard agent found her barefoot on the tracks after she escaped through a broken window.
The agent said the girl had managed to escape from one of the train cars most affected by the accident, La Vanguardia reported, adding that he did not notice her bare feet until about an hour after initially finding her. He told the officer that he had to take off his shoes before climbing through the broken window because they had become trapped between pieces of iron inside the car when it derailed, according to the newspaper.
A relative, Juan Barroso, told reporters that the 6-year-old girl is in good health after receiving three stitches in her head at a hospital. The mayor of her family’s village, located near the ill-fated railway line, said he found some comfort in the fact that this girl was out of danger.

“There are many people who are very sad for the victims of this terrible accident, but there were also many who survived, like the miracle of the girl who is safe,” the mayor of Punta Umbría, José Carlos Hernández, told the press on Tuesday after observing a minute of silence for the victims.
Among them were the girl’s parents, her brother and a cousin. At least 41 people died in the brutal accident that has shaken the nation and left the 6-year-old boy orphaned.
His family’s last name is Zamorano Álvarez, the city council said. But The News is not revealing his name.
Punta Umbría has declared three days of mourning for the victims, including the Zamorano Álvarez family. They were sitting in the front cars that took the brunt of the impact when a train coming in the opposite direction suddenly left the track for reasons still unknown.
Mayor Hernández said that the girl is now with her grandparents in a hotel in Córdoba, the city closest to the accident.
“She has a great family that will do whatever it takes for her to have a happy life,” the mayor said.
