California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) issued a warning to European leaders Tuesday: Stop following one set of rules while President Donald Trump acts as a wrecking ball to the world.

While speaking to reporters in Davos, Switzerland, ahead of the World Economic Forum, Newsom said Trump had toyed with top European officials.

“Europeans should decide for themselves what to do, but what they can’t do is what they’ve been doing,” Newsom said, according to an X video shared by DW News reporter Michaela Kuefner. “And they’ve been fooled. He’s been playing people for fools, and it’s shameful.”

Last week, Trump threatened to punish countries that do not support his effort to take control of Greenland. with additional fees. And he has refused to rule out the possibility of taking the island by force.

EU leaders have rejected Trump’s attempt to seize Greenland, citing concerns that annexing the semi-autonomous Danish territory would dismantle the NATO alliance.

One journalist said Europeans see the way they have been dealing with Trump as “diplomacy.”

“Is this diplomacy with Donald Trump?” Newsom asked. “It’s a T-Rex. You either mate with it or it eats you. One or the other.”

Newsom continued to chide EU leaders for continuing to abide by one set of rules when Trump does not.

“I can’t stand this complicity. People turn around. I should have brought a bunch of knee pads for all the world leaders,” Newsom said.

When asked what he thinks the president’s goal is, Newsom explained that the goal was whatever Trump would want it to be.

“The goal is the world in his image. He is a narcissist,” Newsom said.
