The American team was greeted mostly with cheers (unlike Vice President JD Vance) at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Milan on Friday, but it wasn’t sure beforehand.
International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry has expressed concern that the old Red, White and Blue could be booed at the Milan Cortina Games.
Italians were already protesting the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Olympics, even though the controversial agency was not conducting immigration operations. International anger had also built over the Trump administration’s policies, including threats to take Greenland by force and tariffs that alienated allies.
Coventry said he hoped the opening ceremony would be seen “by everyone as an opportunity to be respectful of each other.”
It turns out that the Americans, all dressed in Ralph Lauren, earned respect with polite applause. Check the reception right here.
