President Donald Trump said he is working hard on something the country “desperately” needs.

But not everyone agrees with its urgency in this case.

“I’m building something right now in the White House, one of the greatest ballrooms, so desperately needed, anywhere in the world,” he said during a News Business interview with Larry Kudlow that aired Tuesday.

Kudlow had asked the president about Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, with whom Trump has been fighting over interest rates. Trump complained about the rising cost of a renovation of the Federal Reserve office buildings under Powell.

That’s when Trump headed to the enormous ballroom he was building on the White House grounds, boasting that he was doing it for “a fraction of what this guy is doing.”

Trump has said the ballroom will cost up to $400 million but will be funded by private donations, a move that has raised ethical and legal questions that the White House has yet to answer.

Trump has been so obsessed with his ballroom that he frequently mentions it without being asked. Last month, during a White House meeting with oil industry executives to discuss Venezuela, Trump suddenly left the table to look out a window at the construction site.

“I have to see this myself,” he said. “Wow, what a view.”

The view at that time wasn’t much; Last year, Trump had the East Wing of the White House demolished to make room for his ballroom, a move that led to a lawsuit from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which is trying to block the project.

Trump has criticized the lawsuit and last month also insisted that the ballroom is “desperately needed” while attacking the agency on social media.

But even after hearing him say it again Tuesday night, critics remained unconvinced, with many pointing out that the real desperate need is relief from rising food prices, rent, health insurance premiums and more.
