Wicked: For Good Star Reacts to Oscars Snub: I’m Shocked!
Michelle Yeoh has a lot to say about the exclusion of “Wicked: For Good” from this year’s Academy Awards.
Speaking to Variety in an interview published Thursday, Yeoh admitted that he was still “in shock” after learning that the second half of the film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical had failed to earn a single Oscar nomination.
“I’m not surprised. I’m shocked! I really am,” she told the outlet. “I think sometimes the problem is that people think, ‘Oh, you already got so much with the first one, let other people have a chance.’ But then I feel like, ‘No, come on!’ It is such a beautiful and well-made film.”
Yeoh, the 2023 Oscar winner for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” starred in “Wicked” and “Wicked: For Good” as Madame Morrible, a mentor-turned-antagonist to rival Oz witches Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo).
“Wicked” premiered to critical acclaim in 2024 and became a holiday box office hit. The film earned 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Erivo, and Best Supporting Actress for Grande.

“Wicked” won for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design, leading many to assume that the Academy would honor its stars for the second film. However, when “Wicked: For Good” hit theaters last fall, reviews were mixed, with some critics noting that the film had not overcome the pre-existing flaws of Act 2 of the theatrical version.
Still, some fans have expressed dismay at the absence of “Wicked: For Good” among this year’s Oscar contenders. Grande, in particular, was supposed to get a nomination, given that her Glinda is the focus of the second film.
Although Yeoh didn’t single out any of the nominated films by name, he told Variety: “If you compare it [with contenders this year]it should be there.”
“It’s not the replica of the first one,” he said. “It’s more elaborate and there are a lot more new destinations in ‘Wicked: For Good’. So I was really, really disappointed.”
Of course, Yeoh doesn’t mind praise these days. On Thursday he received the Golden Bear for lifetime achievement at the Berlin International Film Festival in Germany. Next week he will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
