Woman owes $3,556 for cruise she already paid for after falling victim to elaborate Zelle scam

A family vacation turned into a five-year nightmare. And it started with a payment.

L. Williams found a cruise advisor online who booked his family a week on Carnival Freedom. Great price. A problem. He only accepted Zelle. She sent $3,556. The family sailed through the western Caribbean. Beautiful sunsets. Wonderful memories.

Five years later, he tried to book another cruise. No.

Carnival told him he was on the Do Not Sail list. It turns out that their “consultant” pocketed Zelle’s cash and then used a stolen credit card to book the trip. When the true cardholder disputed the charge, Williams received the blame.

DON’T LEAVE YOUR FAMILY OUT: A GUIDE TO THE DIGITAL LEGACY

You now owe $3,556 for a trip you already paid for. Banned for life. The scammer’s phone number? Offline. (Of course.)

The offers are real right now.

Here’s what you need to know. The cheapest window for domestic flights during spring break is approximately 43 days before departure. For late March trips, that’s this week. Wait until the end of February and prices will rise by 20% to 25%. That’s your money walking out the door.

Fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Saturdays and save up to 30% on weekend flights. Set up Google Flights alerts now. Caribbean rates are down 17% compared to last year.

Combine flights with hotels through Costco, Expedia or Delta Vacations and you can get hundreds off the total.

Scammers circling like sharks

Williams’ story is not unique. More than 38 million people are expected to travel by cruise in 2026 and scammers know it. These are the big disadvantages I’m seeing.

  • The Google trap. Fake cruise line phone numbers appear in search results. A man called what he thought was Carnival’s customer service line and was charged a “docking fee” of $650 per person. That’s nothing. Real cruise lines don’t charge surprise fees over the phone. Always go directly to the official website for contact information.
  • The free cruise postcard. Did you receive one in the mail? Throw it away. The fine print buries you between hundreds of dollars in hidden fees and a windowless cabin with bunk beds. How romantic. An investigation found that the company behind these changes their name every year, making them unsearchable.

  • The Facebook Agent. Scammers pose as travel agents in Facebook groups and collect payments through Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App. Then they disappear. These applications do not have buyer protection. They’re for sending money to people you trust, not strangers selling Caribbean getaways.
  • Your three rules: Always pay with credit card. Never call a customer care number from a Google search, go to the official site. If you want a travel agent, check them out at ASTA.org.

Book wisely and you’ll be savoring something tropical in just a few weeks. Book carelessly and you could end up on the Do Not Sail list, which, ironically, is the worst type of cruise control.

If someone you know is booking a spring break tripsend them this first. It takes two seconds to resend and could save them thousands. A payment to the wrong person cost a woman her vacation money, her cruise line privileges and years of debt headaches.
