American Jordan Stolz, 21, took home another gold medal, this time in the men’s 500-meter speed skating competition, after breaking an Olympic record that had been broken moments before he took to the ice.
Stolz started his engines late and crossed the finish line in 33.77, just sixteen hundredths of a second slower than the world record and eleven hundredths faster than the silver medalist.
Surprisingly, Stolz took to the ice alongside Dutchman Jennings De Boo, who skated in 33.88 seconds. Both races were the first times the men’s 500 meters finished in under 34 seconds in Olympic history.

Minutes before skating, Canadian Laurent Dubreuil broke the previous Olympic record with a time of 34.26 seconds but had to settle for bronze.
Entering Saturday, the previous Olympic record was 34.32 seconds.
Stolz is the first American since Eric Heiden in 1980 to win two gold medals in speed skating. Stolz also won the 1,000 meters earlier in the Games. It is the first American gold in the 500 since Joey Cheek achieved it in 2006, also in Italy.

It is Stolz’s second Olympic record: his time in the 1,000 meters was 1:06.28. Stolz entered the event with the 1,000 meter world record already in his hands. He set the mark in 2024 in Salt Lake City with a time of 1:05.37.

In both events, Stolz shared the ice with De Boo, who also had to settle for silver in the 1,000 meters.
Stolz entered the Games as perhaps the best speed skater in the world. When he arrived in Milan he already had 17 international titles.

Perhaps more are on the way, as Stolz will also compete in the 1,500 meters, an event she has won four times at world tournaments, and in the team event later in the Games.
