Mikaela Shiffrin’s Olympic drought continues after missing the podium Milan Cortina Games women’s giant slalom on Sunday, finishing in 11th place.

The American standout had a combined time of 2:14.42. His races were clean but not fast enough to compete for a podium spot. She showed no outward signs of disappointment after her second run, blowing her cheeks and waving to the fans in the stands with both hands.

The 30-year-old man, who is the winningest athlete on the World Cup circuithas failed to win a medal in eight consecutive Olympic events since the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang.

Italy’s Federica Brignone took home first prize, her second gold medal at these Games and her fifth medal overall. Surprisingly, it was a split silver medal after Sweden’s Sara Hector and Norway’s Thea Stjernesund recorded the same time in both the first and second races.

After Brignone crossed the line to loud applause from the home crowd, Hector and Stjernesund ran to the finish area and bowed to the champion as the fans chanted “Fede” in the background.

“That was the biggest GS ski show we’ve had in a long time,” Shiffrin said. “And to do it, you know, at the Olympics, where people really have their eyes on the sport. Federica skied amazing. It was great to see.”

Redemption for Shiffrin, who placed fourth with teammate Breezy Johnston in the women’s team medley on Thursday, could come in her best event, the slalom, on Wednesday.
