President Donald Trump said Monday he would order the Justice Department to seek the death penalty against Nancy Guthrie’s alleged kidnappers if she dies.

The president first told the New York Post that the suspects would face “very, very, severe, the most severe” consequences if she were found dead. Asked if that meant he would want the Justice Department to carry out the death penalty, Trump responded: “Mostly, yes, that’s true.”

Trump previously struck an optimistic tone about the case on Truth Social. “Hopefully there will be a positive result!!” Trump wrote after praising News’ coverage of the investigation and the “experience and knowledge” of others.

Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie, has not been seen since Jan. 31 and no proof of life has emerged. On occasion, messages have appeared asking for ransom and from informants seeking a cash reward.

In recent developments, authorities released images of an armed and masked suspect wearing gloves at the door of the elder Guthrie’s home in the Tucson area, where she was allegedly taken.

Authorities are now awaiting DNA lab results from a glove found outside the site that could be linked to the abduction. Officials determined the person was carrying a backpack sold at Walmart, which could also limit the search.

A viral report citing an inside source said investigators now believe it was a robbery gone wrong, but both the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI claimed the information did not come from them.
