Robert Carradine, the “Revenge of the Nerds” icon who came from one of Hollywood’s most prominent acting families, has died. He was 71 years old.
Carradine, who won a generation of new fans by playing the father in “Lizzie McGuire,” had struggled with mental illness, his family told Deadline in a statement.
“We are heartbroken by the loss of this beautiful soul and want to recognize Bobby’s brave fight against his nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder. We hope his journey can shed light and encourage addressing the stigma that comes with mental illness,” they said.
Carradine’s older brother, Keith Carradine, emphasized the obstacles his brother faced.
“We want people to know that and there’s no shame in it,” he said, according to Deadline. “It’s a disease that took hold of him and I want to celebrate him for his fight against it and celebrate his beautiful soul. He had a profound talent and we will miss him every day. We will take comfort in how funny he could be, how wise, how absolutely tolerant and tolerant he was. That’s what my little brother was like.”

Carradine, the youngest son of “Grapes of Wrath” actor John Carradine, landed his first major film role in “The Cowboys,” starring John Wayne (1972).
More than a decade later, it would be cool to be a geek like Lewis Skolnick in “Revenge of the Nerds” (1984). The sidelined franchise spawned several sequels in which Carradine appeared.
He also had a prominent role in the Oscar-winning “Coming Home” (1978) and recently appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” (2012).
But Carradine will always be known to younger audiences as Lizzie McGuire’s father in the Disney series “Lizzie McGuire” (2001-2004) and the film.

Carradine said that when he auditioned for the role the producers laughed at him. I was taken aback. “Am I funny? And I got the offer,” he said.
Hilary Duff, who played Lizzie, bid a warm farewell to her TV dad.
“This hurts,” he wrote on Instagram. “It’s really hard to face the reality of an old friend. There was so much warmth in the McGuire family and I always felt so cared for by my parents on screen. I will be forever grateful for that. It saddens me deeply to know that Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him, his family and all those who loved him.”
Carradine is survived by his three children, according to the media.
