Newly released police video shows former WWE executive Vince McMahon ramming his luxury sports car into the back of another vehicle on a Connecticut highway last summer while being followed by a state trooper.
McMahon, now 80, was driving his 2024 Bentley Continental GT more than 100 mph (160 kph) on Merritt Parkway when he crashed in the town of Westport, according to state police.
Video from a police officer’s dash cam shows McMahon accelerating and then braking too late to avoid hitting the back of a BMW. The Bentley then swerves into a guardrail and crosses the road again, creating a cloud of dirt and car parts.
“Why were you driving over 100 mph?” State Police Detective Maxwell Robins asked McMahon after reaching the wrecked Bentley, which can cost more than $300,000.
“I got my granddaughter’s birthday,” McMahon responded, explaining that he was on his way to see her. The encounter was recorded on police body camera video.
No one was seriously injured in the July 24 crash, which occurred the same day WWE legend Hulk Hogan died of a heart attack in Florida.
In addition to the damage to the rear of the BMW, another vehicle traveling on the opposite side of the avenue was struck by flying debris. According to the police video, the driver of that third car was wearing a WWE t-shirt.

McMahon was cited for reckless driving and following too closely. In October, a state judge allowed McMahon to enter a pretrial probation program that will result in the charges being removed from his record next October if he successfully completes the program. He was also ordered to make a $1,000 charitable contribution.
McMahon’s attorney, Mark Sherman, said the crash was just an accident.
“Not all car accidents are a crime,” Sherman said. “Vince’s main concern during this case was the other drivers and he appreciates that the court saw this as more of an accident than a crime that needed to be prosecuted.”
State police said Robins was trying to catch up with McMahon on the parkway and measure his speed before stopping him. They said the incident was not a chase, which occurs when police chase someone who tries to flee from officers. They also said it didn’t appear that McMahon was trying to escape, although in the video the detective suggests otherwise.
“I’m trying to get to you and you keep running away,” Robins says.
“No, no, no. I’m not trying to leave you behind,” McMahon says.
A summary of information about the accident provided to the media shortly after the accident did not mention that a police officer was following McMahon.
The News obtained the videos Wednesday through a public records request. They were first obtained by The Sun newspaper.
The officer’s body camera video also shows him asking McMahon if he was looking at his phone when the accident occurred. McMahon said no, adding that he hadn’t driven his car in a long time.
After Robins tells McMahon that his car is fast, McMahon responds, “Yeah, too (expletive) fast.”
The videos also show McMahon talking to the driver he rear-ended. Barbara Doran of New York City told the AP last summer that McMahon expressed concern about her and was glad she was okay. He said he was headed to a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard at the time of the accident.
After McMahon received the traffic citation, he shook hands with Robins and another police officer and wished him well.
McMahon resigned as WWE CEO in 2022 amid a company investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct. He also resigned as executive chairman of the board of directors of TKO Group Holdings, WWE’s parent company, in 2024, a day after a former WWE employee filed a sexual abuse lawsuit against him. McMahon has denied the allegations. The lawsuit is still pending.
McMahon bought what was then the World Wrestling Federation in 1982 and transformed it from a regional wrestling company into a global phenomenon. In addition to running the company with his wife, Linda, who is now US Secretary of Education, he also performed at WWE events as himself.
