Senator Adam Schiff says Trump has no idea how to end war with Iran

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Ca.) argued that the U.S. military operation in Iran is “simply unsustainable.”

Appearing Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the conversation began after moderator Kristen Welker asked the Democratic senator about Energy Secretary Chris Wright’s comments earlier on the show in which he said he hopes the Iran war will end in the coming weeks.

“Do you accept that timeline? Do you think it’s realistic, based on what you’re seeing?” he asked Schiff.

Noting that he agrees with Wright’s comment that “there are no guarantees” in war, he responded: “It’s quite possible that when they started this war they expected it to end very quickly, that they thought it would be like Venezuela. Except Iran is not like Venezuela. You can’t just pick mullah number two to replace mullah number one and expect things to be different.”

Arguing that the Trump administration has no idea when the war will end, Schiff told Welker that he “hopes and prays that it ends very soon.”

“But as we have seen, our enemy also has the right to vote when things are over,” he continued. “And if Iran keeps blowing up ships, or trying to blow up ships in the strait, and gas prices keep going up and up for the Americans, then it’s very likely that we could become even more entrenched in this, to try to keep the strait open.”

Schiff went on to denounce that “the costs to the American people” are “already too high” before criticizing President Donald Trump for failing to deliver on his promise to lower Americans’ cost of living.

“For the president to promise to reduce the cost of living for Americans is exactly the opposite: it increases the cost and difficulty of Americans affording simple food, shelter, rent and energy. It is simply unsustainable.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Welker asked the California senator if Secretary Wright had a valid point when he stated earlier in the program that the threat from Iran is so significant that a U.S. invasion of the Middle Eastern country “will make the world safe.”

“No, I don’t think [Wright and the Trump administration have a valid point]. And I don’t think the president has been sincere with the American people, first promising not to lead us into another foreign war, then [by] not being willing to tell us what the real costs of this war are going to be. And we still don’t know anything about the secretary. [or] of the president [about what] the real cost of this will be [or] “How long will it last,” he responded.

Schiff argued that we have already “spent billions and billions of dollars” on the deadly conflict and have lost 13 service members to the war, but we still have not been given a “clear articulation of why we are at war.”

“What was the imminent threat we faced? They said it was the nuclear threat, but the intelligence doesn’t support that. They said it was the threat of being hit in the United States by ballistic missiles. That’s years and years away,” he continued.

Schiff also criticized the Trump administration for sending mixed messages about how long the war will last.

“They want regime change, but then they say they don’t want regime change. And when you ask how long this war is going to last, Secretary [Wright] “I can’t tell you, the president won’t tell you,” he told Welker. “And it is because not having a clear idea [objective] “Considering when we started this war makes it very difficult to know when its objectives have been met.”

Concluding his message, Schiff added: “That’s why I think the president was so vague with you when he didn’t describe what kind of deal he wanted. [is] searching with Iran. Because it’s just not clear.”
