Timothée Chalamet ended his chaotic awards season campaign at the 2026 Oscars on Sunday with one of the most divisive looks of the night.

The “Marty Supreme” star appeared at the ceremony wearing an all-white Givenchy suit with wide-leg pants and matching shoes. The look appeared to be a throwback to her 2018 Oscars ensemble, but fans on social media interpreted it as everything from an homage to early 2000s boy bands to Colonel Sanders.

“Timothée Chalamet wows as Kevin from the Backstreet Boys,” one person joked about X, to which another quickly responded, “Don’t you DARE disrespect Kevin Richardson like this.”

Other shots were equally brazen.

“What the hell is this, Keven Federline?!” one person wrote, alluding to the former dancer who was married to Britney Spears from 2004 to 2007.

Another added: “Looks like a prom date who has really bad breath and didn’t ask for a corsage.”

The reactions weren’t particularly surprising considering the final stretch of Chalamet’s Oscar campaign. In recent weeks, he has received criticism for seemingly going out of his way to embody the smugness of his “Supreme Marty” persona in interviews and public appearances.

“It’s been seven or eight years in which I feel like I’ve put on really committed, top-notch performances,” he told a reporter in December. “This is really high-level bullshit.”

She also sparked an online frenzy when she proclaimed that “no one cares” about opera and ballet during a conversation with her “Interstellar” co-star Matthew McConaughey at a CNN and Variety town hall in February.

His dismissive view of the performing arts was widely condemned by a host of ballet and opera artists, while celebrities such as Jamie Lee Curtis and Nathan Lane also weighed in.

And in opening Sunday’s Oscars, host Conan O’Brien didn’t miss the opportunity to jokingly criticize Chalamet for the controversy.

“Security is extremely tight. I’m told there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities,” he said in his monologue. Addressing the actor directly, he added: “They’re angry because you left out jazz.”
