The dramatic look was highly coded for Morticia Addams, but fitting for the director of “Hamnet,” a film that centers on the family life of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife Anne “Agnes” Hathaway (Jessie Buckley) as they deal with the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet. (Jacobi Jupe) Zhao is nominated for an Oscar for Best Director for her work on the film.

The look could also have served as a mourning outfit for the cancellation of the upcoming “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot, titled “Buffy: New Sunnydale,” starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and “The Lowdown” star Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and directed by Zhao.

Gellar broke the news on Instagram on Saturday that Hulu had abandoned the project.

“I never thought I’d wear Buffy’s stylish but affordable boots again, and thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her,” Gellar said. “And how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
