Democratic lawmakers and pundits are taking President Donald Trump to task for his social media post celebrating the death of Robert Mueller, the former FBI director and special counsel who oversaw the 2016 investigation into Russian election interference, calling it “disgusting” and “insane.”

Mueller died Friday night at age 81.his family said in a statement to the News on Saturday.. The cause of death has not yet been revealed, although two people familiar with the situation told MS NOW that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Hours after Mueller’s family asked in the statement that their “privacy” be respected, the president wrote on his Truth Social platform: “Robert Mueller just died. Well, I’m glad he’s dead. He can’t hurt innocent people anymore!”

The post generated fierce responses from legions of Democratic politicians and media personalities, who denounced its insensitivity and lamented Trump’s continued indifference to past presidential decorum.

“I hope all the Republicans who were outraged at people for celebrating Charlie Kirk’s death will immediately condemn Trump for saying ‘I’m glad he’s dead’ about Robert Mueller,” influential liberal politician Harry Sisson wrote in X. “This is disgusting.”

However, many Trump supporters defend him, arguing that Mueller spread “the most destructive lies of the 21st century” and was “a piece of trash” for his so-called “persecution” of Trump. Other conservatives condemned the publication.

“This is the kind of thing Trump does that makes people not only oppose him but hate him,” wrote News senior political analyst Brit Hume. “There was no need to say anything.”

Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) called Mueller “a true public servant” in his social media tribute, writing, “Yet the President of the United States sickeningly celebrates Mueller’s death simply because he exposed Trump’s efforts to steal the 2016 election.”

Former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan argued that too many journalists are reporting on Trump’s post without any detraction, writing, “Too little acknowledgment of how crazy and inappropriate it is for the president to respond like this.”

He added: “Imagine your response if it were [former President Joe] Biden.”

The telling thing here, of course, is that Trump has always insisted that Mueller AUTHORIZED him.

At a time when many young men, including President Trump, were trying to avoid serving in Vietnam, Mueller not only volunteered for the Marine Corps after graduating from Princeton, but spent a year waiting for an injured knee to heal so he could serve. Whether you support the president or not, you know this comment is disgusting.

Robert Mueller earned a Bronze Star for bravery and a Purple Heart as a Marine fighting for this country. He was a great American.

Donald Trump is a horrible human being and a disgrace to him… pic.twitter.com/Qe9EeaxnxO

The cruelty is the point. Trump’s goal is to distract him from rising gas prices, his aimless war, ICE abuses, and the Epstein files. Don’t give him what he wants.

And may Robert Mueller, a US Marine and lifelong public official, rest in peace. https://t.co/C51NTOt2rq

Trump is so unpresidential and an embarrassment to our country.

God forbid, when someone dies, don’t say anything if you have nothing good to say, a concept we teach literal children.
