A UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Sunday that Secretary General Antonio Guterres welcomed the agreement as a positive step to relieve tensions.

“He hopes that the agreement will contribute to lasting peace and foster an environment conducive to addressing broader and long -standing problems between the two countries,” Dujarric said.

The main military officials of India and Pakistan are scheduled to speak on Monday.

India and Pakistan have fought daily since Wednesday throughout the robust and mountainous control line, which is marked by razor wire, surveillance towers and bunkers that wind over the foothills populated by villages, tangled shrubs and forests.

They have routinely blamed the other for starting skirmishes, while insisting that they were only taking reprisals.

Kashmira is divided between the two countries and claimed by both. China also claims part of Kashmir, but does not participate in the fight.

India and Pakistan have fought two of their three wars on the region and their ties have been molded by conflicts, aggressive diplomacy and mutual suspicions, mainly due to their competitive statements.
