The Kurdo Pkk group announced Monday that it will be disassembled and completely dissolved, ending its insurgency of a decades against the Turkish state, according to the Firat news agency, an exit linked to the group. The PKK has long been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, Türkiye, the European Union, NATO and many other nations and entities.

The historical movement announced on Monday will end a 40 -year conflict that killed more than 40,000 people.

The group declared that it had completed its “historical mission” and, therefore, had decided to dissolve the organizational structure of the PKK, with the practical process that will be administered and carried out by the leader support [Abdullah Ocalan]and to finish the armed struggle method. “

The announcement occurred after the founder and imprisoned ideological leader of the group, Abdullah Ocalan, made a call In a public letter in February, aimed at its leadership, asking the PKK to place their weapons permanently. The PKK declared a high unilateral fire The following month.

The group was formed in 1978 with the ambition to create a separate and independent homeland for the great Kurdish minority of Turkey, but then withdrew their separatist ambitions and focused on achieving greater rights for the group within Turkish society.

A spokesman for Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the ruler Justice and Development Party (AKP) welcomed the announcement, calling it, “a significant step towards a terror free turkey.”

Spokesman Omer Celik said the PKK decision should “be implemented with all its dimensions, without any deficiencies and with concrete objectives.”

However, there were no details immediately about the technicalities of the group dissolution, such as what would happen with all the weapons he has had for decades, or if their members would receive legal amnesty in Türkiye.

In his statement, the PKK said that the issue of Kurds rights had reached a point where it can be resolved through democratic policy, “urging the Turkish Parliament to assume” a historical role “when completing the process.

The Erdogan government has had a complex relationship with the country’s Kurds.

While some progress was achieved to restore Kurds rights since the AKP came to power in 2002, dozens of Kurdish rights defenders were also imprisoned after the collapse of peace conversations in 2015.

The announcement will have broader consequences for the region, especially in Iraq, Syria and Iran, all of which share borders with Türkiye and have important populations of their own Kurdish minorities.

The disarmament of PKK could also help clarify a thorny problem between the United States and its NATO ally. Türkiye has criticized for a long time with the support of the United States for the Kurdo Sirio YPG group, which Türkiye considers an extension of the PKK.

The YPG and the allied Kurdish militias were instrumental allies to the United States in the war against ISIS in Syria.
