Robert De Niro called President Donald Trump more than an “American problem” at the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival this year.
Variety reported that Trump’s open critic denounced the leader of his nation as a “Filisto President” and threat to the arts while accepting an honorary palm of Or on Tuesday.
“In my country, we are fighting like hell for democracy that we once begins. And that affects us all here because the arts are democratic,” said De Niro. “Art is inclusive. It brings together people, like tonight. Art seeks truth, art covers diversity, and that is why art is a threat, so we are a threat, for autocrats and fascists.”
“President Philistine President had appointed head of one of our main cultural institutions,” he said, referring to Washington, the Kennedy Center of DC. “It has reduced financing and support for arts, humanities and education.”
During his speech, the Oscar winning actor also approached the 100% rate proposed by Trump over all the films produced outside the United States, telling his audience: “Let him sink for a minute.”
“You can’t put a price on creativity, but apparently you can put a tariff,” he mocked.

“Of course, this is unacceptable,” De Niro continued. “All these attacks are unacceptable, and this is not just an American problem. It is global.”
Broadcasting a call to action, he said: “And as a movie, we cannot simply sit and look at. We have to act now. Without violence, but with great passion and determination.”
“It’s time for everyone to care about the freedom to organize, protest and when there are elections, of course, vote,” he continued. “Tonight, and during the next 11 days, we show our strength and commitment celebrating art in this glorious festival.”
De Niro has never been shy to face Trump, who previously called him “a moron”, a “clown”, a “monster” and a “tyrant”, among other things.

However, De Niro’s political statements have taken him to a little hot water. The past spring, the leadership foundation of the National Broadcastros Association decided not to pass with the actor his “Award for Service to America” after giving a ardent speech outside the New York Hush Money Proof of Trump.
“The recent high profile activities of De Niro will create a distraction of philanthropic work that we expected to recognize,” the organization said in a statement.
