Israel has recovered thousands of articles belonging to the most famous spy in the country after a covert operation in Syria.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared some of the 2,500 articles of the Syrian archive related to Eli Cohen, an Israeli spy that infiltrated the political step in Syria, with Cohen’s widow. On Sunday marked 60 years since Cohen was hung in a place in Damascus.

The recently energetic elements in Israel include documents, recordings, photos and articles collected by Syrian intelligence after their capture in January 1965, letters in their own writing to his family in Israel, photographs of his activity during his operational mission in Syria and personal objects that were taken from his home after his capture.

Among the recovered elements was a written will written by Cohen hours before its execution, Agency France-Presse reported.

The suitcases of the elements brought to Israel included worn folders full of handwritten notes, keys of their apartment in Damascus, passports and false identification documents, Mossad missions to monitor specific people and places, and documentation of all the efforts of its widow, Nadia Cohen, begging world leaders for their liberation of the prison.

A Syrian government spokesman did not immediately respond to a request from the Reuters news agency to comment on how Syria’s articles had recovered.

Cohen, who was born in Egypt from a Jewish family, was sent by Mossad to Syria, where a Syrian entrepreneur named Kamal Amin Taabet was passed, the BBC reported. After making friends with the influential political, commercial and military figures, he was able to obtain secret information, which returned to Israel.

Cohen’s success in Syria was one of the first main achievements of the Mossad Espionage Agency, and the high secret intelligence he obtained is widely accredited by helping Israel to prepare for his rapid victory in the War of the Middle East of 1967.

Eli Cohen managed to forge nearby contacts within the political and military hierarchy of the Archionemigo of Israel in the early 1960s, which finally became a main advisor to the Minister of Defense of Syria. In 1965, Cohen was caught by radiography from Radio to Israel. He was judged and hanged in a Damascus square on May 18, 1965. His remains have not yet been returned to Israel, where he is considered a national hero.

Isreal previously recovered a clock that belonged to Cohen from Syria, the BBC reported in 2018. Details of how Israel seized the clock was not revealed, apart from the fact that it was returned “in a special operation of the Mossad.”

In 2019, actor Sacha Baron Cohen portrayed Eli Cohen (unrelated) in a six -episodes netflix series called “The Spy”.

“We carried out a special Mossad operation, by the state of Israel, to bring its archive (from Eli Cohen), which had been in the Syrian intelligence safes for 60 years,” Netanyahu told Nadia Cohen on Sunday in Jerusalem.

Before seeing the articles, Nadia Cohen told Netanyahu that the most important thing was to recover Cohen’s body. Netanyahu said Israel continued working to locate Cohen’s body. Last week, Israel recovered the body of an Israeli soldier from Syria who had been missing for more than four decades, after he was killed during a clash with Syrian forces in Lebanon in 1982.

“Eli is an Israeli legend. He is the biggest agent that Israeli intelligence has had in the years that the state existed. There was no one like him,” said Netanyahu.
